Sales Careers Overview

Sales careers are ideal for outgoing people who enjoy helping others find products they need.

With so many products available, there's quite a wide range of types of sales jobs such as automobiles, clothing, furniture, electronics, equipment and even parts for equipment. In addition to recommending products based on customers' needs, sales people answer questions about the products they sell, demonstrate products and process sales including totaling purchases, figuring tax when applicable and accepting payment.

Sales Education

Sales jobs don't require a degree, but most employers do look for applicants who have a high school diploma. Having graduated high school, you'll have the reading, writing and mathematical skills useful for sales careers. Most of the skills can be learned on the job, but larger retailers do have sales training programs to familiarize new employees with their equipment, policies and procedures.

Sales Job Market

You might think that the popularity of internet shopping would negatively impact careers in sales. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that some sales have declined due to online sales, such as book stores, other sales areas continue to thrive, such as clothing stores and automobile sales. Typically strength or weakness in sales jobs is tied to the economy, but population also affects the demand for sales people. In 2012 there were 4,668,300 sales jobs in the U.S. with a 10 percent increase in those jobs by 2022.

Sales Salaries

Because many sales positions are part-time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the median income as an hourly wage rather than an annual sum, with the average hourly wage being $10.15. There are different types of sales careers, though, and some are commission based or a combination of an hourly rate and commission. Skilled commissioned sales people are capable of increasing their income, but their success can depend on the economy and whether or not consumers are spending money or trying to save as much as possible.
