Discover the Best Companies That Support LGBTQ+ Workers

Workplace inclusivity for LGBTQ+ individuals is improving. More companies that support LGBTQ+ employees have made steps to create more open environments that acknowledge and celebrate diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.
It’s thankfully more common for companies to have non-discrimination policies and a public commitment to hiring more lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and people of other sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQ+) employees.
To understand where this is going, Monster consulted the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI), which rates companies based on their LGBTQ equality.
The CEI rating criteria have four key pillars against which companies are considered:
- workforce protections
- inclusive benefits
- supporting an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility
- responsible citizenship
Where We’ve Made Progress
The number of companies meeting all the index criteria and gaining the title of “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality” has hit 842. Notable new entries include:
- Boeing
- Conduent
- Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
- NetApp
- Travel + Leisure
- Western Union
- Zara
Based on the CEI data, 91% of the Fortune 500 companies have created gender identity protections as part of their nondiscrimination policies. On top of that, 86% percent of all the 1,271 CEI-rated businesses offer transgender-inclusive health insurance coverage. Both percentages have been steadily growing signaling more that companies are taking clear action to support LGBTQ+ employees.
Organizations are also starting to establish LGBTQ+ employee resource groups (ERGs) or support networks, to promote a safe space for employees to connect, share experiences and find solidarity. These groups play a crucial role in creating a sense of community and understanding within the workforce.
Areas That Need Improvement
But there’s still a long way to go. In fact, according to a Monster survey, 76% of workers report that their organization does not have a LGBTQ ERG or support group. Additionally, only 14% of workers identifying as LGBTQ+ said they feel comfortable disclosing their sexual orientation to their manager or boss.
We shouldn’t overlook the lack of LGBTQ+ representation in leadership as well. Only around 0.4% of directors in the Fortune 500 are LGBTQ+. Finally, many people in the workplace are still not aware of the challenges faced by the community and don’t know how to practically be a LGBTQ+ ally at work.
How to Spot an Inclusive Company
When seeking employment in workplaces that claim to respect and support LGBTQ+ individuals, what can you do to ensure they are truly companies that support LGBTQ+? Here are some signs to look for:
- Research the company’s policies and statements regarding diversity and inclusion. Do they support The Equality Act?
- Is their commitment visible through their company website, social media presence, public declarations, and initiatives - beyond Pride Month?
- How many employees use personal pronouns in their company signatures or individual professional social media profiles?
- Have you come across any LGBTQ+ resource groups or networks during the interview process?
- Did you find any data on the percentage of LGBTQ+ workers within the company’s workforce? A higher representation suggests an environment where diversity is valued.
Top 7 Companies That Support LGBTQ+ with Consistent 100% Scores
Seven businesses from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s list of companies that support LGBTQ+ have consistently earned a perfect rating since the report was first released in 2002.
