The best cities to start a career in 2026 are Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Akron, Ohio; and Dayton, Ohio, according to Monster’s Build-a-Career Score. The rankings evaluate 100 U.S. metros based on career opportunities and rental affordability to identify where workers have the strongest foundation for long-term career growth.

Finding a great job is only the first step toward building a career. Where you choose to live can shape your financial future just as much as the job you accept, meaning both career opportunity and rental affordability are important factors to consider.

Monster’s Build-a-Career Score identifies the metros that offer the strongest balance of both.

The results show that the best places to build a career aren’t always America’s biggest employment centers. Instead, many of the highest-ranked metros are outside the nation’s largest coastal hubs, where career opportunity and rental affordability are more closely aligned.

The top 15 best cities to start a career combine strong career opportunities with rental affordability. Harrisburg ranks first overall, followed by Akron and Dayton.

5 Key Findings From Monster’s Build-a-Career Score

Monster’s Build-a-Career Score found that affordable housing and strong job opportunities matter most together. Harrisburg ranked first overall, Ohio placed five metros in the Top 10, and many high-cost coastal cities ranked lower once rent was considered.

  Harrisburg Sets the National Benchmark

  Harrisburg earned the highest Build-a-Career Score in the nation by combining the strongest Career Opportunity Score in the analysis with a Rental Affordability Score of 85.6. That balance propelled Harrisburg to an overall score of 92.8—more than six points ahead of second-place Akron.

  The result shows why looking at opportunity and rental costs together matters. Harrisburg did not rank first on rental affordability alone. Instead, its combination of strong job availability relative to the local labor force and comparatively attainable rents set it apart.

  Ohio Dominates the Rankings

  No state performed better than Ohio overall, with five Ohio metros ranked among the nation’s Top 10:

  • Akron (#2)
  • Dayton (#3)
  • Cleveland (#5)
  • Toledo (#6)
  • Columbus (#7)

  Together, they demonstrate Ohio’s strong position in the rankings, with multiple metros offering a competitive combination of job availability and attainable rental costs.

  Akron and Dayton both earned Rental Affordability Scores above 90, while Cleveland and Columbus paired solid affordability with stronger Career Opportunity Scores. Toledo followed a slightly different path, earning one of the highest Rental Affordability Scores among the Top 10.

  Ohio, Pennsylvania, & Wisconsin Lead the Top 10

  Nine of the nation’s 10 highest-ranked metros are located across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

  Pennsylvania’s Harrisburg was placed at #1 and Pittsburgh at #8, while Wisconsin’s Madison and Milwaukee ranked #4 and #10, respectively.

  The concentration reinforces a broader finding from the analysis: Many of the strongest combinations of job opportunity and rental affordability are found outside the nation’s largest coastal employment centers.

  The Strongest Markets Balance Career Opportunity With Rental Affordability

  One of the clearest findings is that neither opportunity nor affordability alone determines how a metro ranks.

  Boston and Washington, DC, posted above-average Career Opportunity Scores but ranked much lower overall because higher rental costs reduced their Build-a-Career Scores.

  Boston, for example, earned a Career Opportunity Score of 73.6, but its Rental Affordability Score of 16.6 pushed it to #85 overall. DC ranked #71 with a Career Opportunity Score of 61.9 and a Rental Affordability Score of 48.4.

  The opposite pattern appears in markets such as McAllen, Texas. McAllen earned the highest Rental Affordability Score in the analysis but ranked #79 overall because its Career Opportunity Score was just 0.6.

  The highest-ranked metros consistently performed well across both sides of the equation: strong career opportunity and rental affordability.

  Building a Career Is About More Than Finding a Job

  Traditional rankings often focus on where jobs are available. The Build-a-Career Score asks a broader question: Where can workers find the best combination of career opportunity and rental affordability?

  A large number of job opportunities might make a market attractive, but rental costs can affect how much financial flexibility workers have as they navigate their careers. At the same time, lower rents offer limited advantage if local employment opportunities are scarce.

  Looking at both factors provides another way for workers to evaluate the markets they may be considering for the next stage of their careers.

Which Regions Ranked Highest for Career Opportunity & Affordability?

Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin produced many of the highest-ranked metros, while several Southeastern cities also performed well by balancing career opportunities with rental affordability.
