Job Number Title: Science Laboratory Assistant Pay Schedule: CASE- Assistant Scale FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Principal and Classroom Teacher(s) JOB SUMMARY Assists science teacher in the operation of the school science laboratory. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Processes new acquisitions and maintains science department inventory which may include simple cleaning and maintenance tasks. Maintains, or assists in maintaining, accurate logs and records. Investigates and pretests new labs and new procedure techniques, as directed. Prepares, assembles, labels, stages, delivers, retrieves, and stores equipment and materials for authorized laboratory investigations and demonstrations, following teacher directions, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and local procedures. Reviews preparation needs with the teacher before laboratory investigations Assists with inspection, cleaning, routine maintenance, and orderly storage of laboratory equipment. Removes defective equipment from service and reports repair or replacement needs. Supports chemical inventory control by recording receipt, quantity, storage location, hazard information, disposal and other required inventory data; helps maintain current SDS access and an emergency inventory copy as directed. Pretests new or revised laboratory procedures only when directed by the teacher and after hazards, controls, PPE, waste handling, and emergency procedures have been reviewed. May coordinate routine tasks of trained and supervised student laboratory aides as assigned by the teacher. Performs other related duties as assigned, consistent with training, authorization, and safe laboratory practice. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A high school diploma or equivalency. College level training in science desirable. One of the three areas listed below is preferred:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS Light Work: Exerting moderate but not constant physical effort to perform light work, typically involving some combination of balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking and may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 25 pounds), visual perception and discrimination, the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, perceive and discriminate color, perceive odors, and require oral communications.

Final placement is subject to review and approval by the Human Resources Department.
