Watertown Public Schools is seeking an experienced and dynamic Athletic and Activities Director to provide each student with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities that will foster personal skills and growth, as well as a sense of knowledge and confidence of working together with a team or organization towards a specific goal. This is a .5 district-wide position, with flexible hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Connecticut certification in administration (092).
  • Valid Connecticut coaching permit.
  • Evidence of successful coaching and/or administrative experience.
  • A deep understanding and knowledge of all CIAC guidelines and rules
  • Proven ability to manage all State compliance requirements for anything related to athletics
  • Experience as an athletic director preferred

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize and administer the overall program of extracurricular activities including interscholastic athletics, service organizations and oversee student clubs.
  • Keep the building principal and district administration informed of current trends in extracurricular activities.
  • Administer policies and procedures and coordinate the recruiting, interviewing, selection and assignment of coaches.
  • Evaluate all head coaches annually.
  • Require head coaches to access assistant coaches annually.
  • Maintain the necessary certification records for all coaches, as required by the State Department of Education.
  • Interpret and communicate to staff, students and parents, all school, conference and CIAC regulations governing interscholastic athletics.
  • Assume responsibilities for planning, organizing and conducting staff meetings and in-service programs focused on extracurricular activities and student clubs.
  • Represent school at league and CAS/CIAC meetings.
  • Arrange for transportation requirements for all athletic teams.
  • Schedule all interscholastic athletic events.
  • Hire officials, police, and other supervision as required and assume general responsibility for the proper supervision of all home contests.
  • Develop and implement appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities.
  • Arrange all details of visiting teams and official's needs as appropriate.
  • Arrange practice schedules for equitable use of athletic fields and facilities.
  • Review, revise and distribute student-athlete handbooks.
  • Review, revise and distribute coaches' handbook.
  • Maintain eligibility rules and submit certified lists to the CIAC.
  • Provide and arrange for proper notification to student-athletes on local, league and state athletic eligibility requirements.
  • Submit to the CIAC all other appropriate forms and information as required regarding the athletic program.
  • Keep records of results of all school athletic contests, and maintain a record file of all award winners.
  • Provide athletes with information on eligibility, transfer rules, and other athletic regulations.
  • Provide medical coverage as needed for athletic contests and ensure through constant communication with the school nurses that physical exam requirements are met by all student-athletes.
  • Supervise the athletic trainer and athletic department secretary, if applicable.
  • Assist personnel in the improvements of knowledge and instructional skills by encouraging participation in clinics, workshops and state meetings.
  • Foster support for the athletic program and school spirit among non-participants.
  • Maintain proper levels of sportsmanship at all athletic contests.
  • Serve as a vehicle through which all matters pertaining to extracurricular activities are brought to the attention of the principal.
  • Oversee service organization and student club faculty leaders.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of athletic equipment and uniforms.
  • Oversee monthly meetings with Student Athletic Advisory Board

Financial Duties

  • Prepare and administer the budget for extracurricular activities, including athletics in cooperation with the principals.
  • Requisition program supplies and equipment.
  • Review and sign all invoices submitted for payment.
  • Conduct schooled reviews of athletic accounts.
  • Supervise all ticket sales and assume responsibility for proper handling and accounts of funds.

Property, Equipment and Supplies

  • Prepare and administer the budget for extracurricular activities, including athletics in cooperation with the principals.
  • Requisition program supplies and equipment.
  • Review and sign all invoices submitted for payment.
  • Conduct yearly inventory and keep accurate records of equipment, uniforms, etc.
  • Supervise all ticket sales and assume responsibility for proper handling and accounts of funds.

Public Relations

  • Ensure students are appropriately and equitably recognized for participation and success in extracurricular activities.
  • Create good will and public relations among respective league members, parents, coaches and school administration.
  • Serve as liaison to booster groups.
