Position Description

Reports to: Department Chair of Social and Behavioral Science

Supervises: None

FLSA: Exempt

Status: Contract, Part-Time Adjunct

The Adjunct Instructor in History & Social Sciences is responsible for designing lesson plans, delivering engaging lectures, and evaluating student performance within the disciplines of history and social sciences. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, instructors may facilitate laboratory or experiential learning sessions that support hands-on exploration and research. Instructional delivery may take place in in-person, online, or hybrid formats.

Essential Responsibilities

Provides oversight of curricular content related to program coordination, including but not limited to the following:

  • Provides instruction that introduces students to the discipline of study.
  • Develop course syllabi, outlines, and lesson plans for curriculum courses assigned.
  • Review and select appropriate textbooks, instructional materials, and media for the classes to be taught.
  • Develops lectures, classroom activities, and hands-on exercises for students to participate in and learn.
  • Monitors and records student progress in courses.
  • Administers tests or other evaluation methods to students.
  • Keeps records of student attendance.
  • Create an effective learning environment.
  • Keep current with information and skills in the respective teaching field.
  • Comply with college policies, internal audit procedures, and local and state rules and regulations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for extended periods of time. The instructor frequently uses their hands to handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, and communicate by speaking and listening. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 20 pounds. The position may also require bending, reaching, and setting up laboratory materials and equipment.

Qualifications & Degree Requirements

  • Masters degree in History, Social Sciences OR in a related field with 18 graduate semester hours in History or Social Sciences.
  • Must be able to teach seated classes on campus.
  • Experience with Blackboard and Canvas a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Community College teaching experience in seated and online courses preferred.
  • Experience teaching dual-enrolled students.
