Reports To:Superintendent / High School Principals

Position Purpose

TheAthletic Director & District Activities Coordinatoroversees the planning, implementation, coordination, and overall compliance of middle school and high school athletic programs across Socorro Consolidated Schools. Additionally, this role serves as the central manager for district-wide athletic and school activity communications, managing primary social media platforms and event calendars for Socorro Consolidated Schools.

Equal parts program administrator, mentor, and public communications lead, the Athletic Director acts as a trusted leader to coaches, school site administrators, student-athletes, and the broader community—ensuring efficient game operations, fiscal accountability, NMAA/NMPED compliance, and positive public engagement.

Essential Functions

Program Leadership & Collaborative Trust-Building

• Partner with Site Leaders:Build strong, collaborative relationships with school principals, assistant principals, and district leadership to ensure interscholastic sports and activities align seamlessly with academic goals.
• Supervise & Support Coaching Staff:Recruit, evaluate, and mentor head coaches and assistant coaches across all athletic programs, serving as a supportive guide to foster professional growth, sportsmanship, and positive team cultures.
• Promote Student-Athlete Welfare:Drive district-wide initiatives that prioritize student mental health, academic eligibility, physical safety, and positive conduct on and off the field.

Operations, Scheduling & Event Management

• Interscholastic Scheduling:Schedule all interscholastic athletic contests, tournaments, practice times, and facility usage for secondary sports across the district.
• Game Day Operations:Oversee all home athletic events, ensuring proper staffing including game officials, event supervisors, gatekeepers, security, emergency medical coverage, and chain crews.
• Transportation & Facilities Coordination:Partner with district transportation and maintenance departments to coordinate team travel logistics, athletic facility readiness, field maintenance, and equipment staging.

District Communications & Social Media Coordination

• District Social Media Management:Serve as the primary administrator for Socorro Consolidated Schools' official social media platforms, regularly sharing updates, scores, student achievements, and athletic highlights.
• Unified District Activity Calendar:Reach out regularly to all schools across the district to compile athletic events, extracurricular activities, and school functions into a centralized master calendar hosted on the district website.
• Publicity & Community Engagement:Promote public support of district academic and athletic programs by serving as the primary media spokesperson and broadcasting announcements across district communication channels.

NMAA Compliance & Administrative Governance

• State & District Compliance:Enforce full compliance with New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) rules, New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) mandates, Title IX guidelines, and district administrative policies.
• Eligibility & Safety Tracking:Oversee the collection, verification, and maintenance of all student-athlete eligibility documentation, including academic progress checks, physical exams, concussion protocols, insurance, and emergency forms.
• Contest Reporting & Ratings:Manage accurate state reporting, contest results submission, and official ratings according to NMAA timelines.

Financial Accountability & Asset Management

• Budget Oversight:Prepare, monitor, and administer the district’s athletic budget in accordance with state purchasing standards and financial regulations. Oversee team procurement and financial matters and ensure state and district compliance.
• Inventory & Requisitions:Oversee the procurement, distribution, inventorying, and maintenance of athletic equipment, uniforms, and safety gear.
• Gate & Concession Oversight:Supervise athletic revenue processing, gate receipts, fundraising activities, and ticket sales tracking in coordination with district finance officials.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

• Education:Bachelor’s degree in Education, Sports Management, Communications, Educational Leadership, or a related field.

• Master’s degree in Educational Leadership or Athletic Administration preferred.

• Licensure:

• ValidNew Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED)Educational Administrator License (Level 3B)ORLevel 2/3 Teaching License.
• Valid NMPED Coaching License.
• Valid NFHS / First Aid / CPR / AED Certifications or obtaining these within three months of hire date..

• Experience:

• Minimum of 3–5 years of successful head coaching or athletic administration experience at the secondary level.
• Experience managing organizational social media accounts, digital calendars, or public communications preferred.
• Demonstrated track record of managing NMAA compliance, game operations, and budget management within New Mexico public schools highly desirable.

• Social Media & Digital Literacy:Proficiency in operating major social media platforms, managing content calendars, and utilizing website content management systems (CMS).
• Event & Organizational Management:Exceptional ability to multi-task, manage logistics, coordinate facilities, and execute complex event logistics efficiently.
• Leadership & Mentorship:Strong ability to recruit, evaluate, motivate, and guide coaching staff while maintaining accountability and sportsmanship.
• Communication & Public Relations:Outstanding verbal and written communication skills to effectively represent the district with local media, booster organizations, parents, and community partners.
• Fiscal Stewardship:High attention to detail regarding procurement, inventory control, ticket sales, and budget administration.

Working Conditions

• Travel:Regular travel required within the district and to away athletic contests throughout the region/state.
• Environment:Split between standard office work, gymnasium settings, and outdoor athletic fields exposed to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind).
• Schedule:Full-time, 12-month contract (requires frequent evening and weekend hours to oversee athletic events and manage real-time social media updates).
• Compensation:Paid according to the administrative/director salary schedule as approved by the Socorro Consolidated Schools Board of Education.
