    Position Description

    Heavy Equipment Operator

    Responsible for the safe operation of various types of heavy equipment machinery used for site excavation and utility installation, and demolition of sites. May operate scrapers, backhoes, excavators, dozers and other heavy equipment as needed. Will clean and check equipment prior and after operation. May assist other craft workers.

    Additional hourly wages added for Scraper and Grader Operators!!

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or repairs to supervisor.
    • Fine grade fill to grades given by foreman.
    • Bulk various materials as required in site preparation.
    • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
    • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
    • Watch for hand signals to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
    • Monitor equipment gauges to ensure equipment is operating in proper working order and in a safe mode.
    • Maintain a clean job site: pick up any items and secure job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
    • Plow snow and salt roads according to departmental policy.
    • Gather and load dirt and waste products from job sites onto trucks
    • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using various heavy equipment.
    • Erect and disassemble shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
    • Excavate sewer, water, and storm drain trenches, using pipe-laying and laser guidance equipment.
    • Load, unload, and identify materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
    • Ability to travel from personal residence to work location.
    • Maintain accurate equipment logs and records.

    Qualifications:

    To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid and appropriate state driver's license prior to employment. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.

    • Working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in site excavation and utility work.

    • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

    • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.

    • Ability to operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.

    • Ability to make independent judgments which have considerable impacts on the organization.

    Education and Experience:

    • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.

    Physical Skills and Abilities:

    • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, concrete and asphalt.

    • Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects of 75 lbs frequently, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.

    • Requires the employee to regularly use hands/fingers to handle, feel or operate controls, and reach with hands and arms.

    • Frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear.

    • Frequently required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell.

    Working Conditions:

    • Noise level is generally loud.

    • Variety of weather conditions ranging from hot/humid to cold/wet conditions.
