Job Description:

The hours for this position are Monday -Friday from 6:00 am - 2:30 pm.

This is routine manual work involving the maintenance of grounds and equipment found in a recreation program or at an institution or facility. Work is performed under general supervision with assignments being outlined in detail and spot-checked by inspections. Although it is not a normal function of this position, supervision may be exercised over part-time and/or temporary employees.

Typical Work Activities:
  • Mows, rakes and cuts grass;
  • Cleans grounds of trash, debris, and similar material; Maintains lawns, grounds, playing fields, and playground equipment;
  • Levels grades and removes stones;
  • Removes snow from walkways and other areas;
  • Spreads sand and salt;
  • Assists in miscellaneous: activities such as moving heavy objects;
  • Assists in other groundskeeping activities, such as seeding, fertilization, and watering lawns;
  • Transplants seedlings, plants and cares for trees and shrubs; including clipping and pruning;
  • Performs general maintenance tasks in the preparation and care of baseball, football and soccer fields; as well as: fences, goals, stands and other related equipment;
  • Operates incinerator, removes garbage and delivers garbage to landfill;
  • Maintains equipment used in grounds maintenance;
  • Assists in maintenance of roads and driveways;
  • Performs maintenance tasks on golf courses;
  • May make minor repairs to buildings;
  • Drives motor equipment as required for maintenance tasks; May perform minor tasks of a semi-skilled nature such as carpentry, welding, painting, plumbing, and minor electric maintenance;
  • Does related work as required.

Requirements:

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

Working knowledge of grounds maintenance activities; willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions; willingness to perform routine manual work; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; dependability; initiative; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

No minimum qualifications.

Special Requirement:

An appointing authority may require possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's license at time of appointment.

Additional Information:

The Groundskeeper I is a non-competitive Civil Service title, Grade 6, with the starting salary of $44,125. This is a permanent, full-time, position at 40 hours per week. The hours for this position are Monday - Friday from 6:00 am - 2:30 pm.
