Summary

Responsible for Heavy and Light Equipment operation, maintenance of equipment, and job safety, and assisting in the maintenanceand construction of the City of Denton roadway system.
Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

Essential Functions:
  • Operates heavy complex motorized equipment such as paving/milling machine, track loader, scraper, compaction equipment, backhoe, front-end loader, skid steer loader, asphalt roller, and motor grader, etc. in a proficient manner for the purpose of construction, maintenance, or repair of the City of Denton?s roadways
  • Performs skilled tasks associated with equipment operation and operates smaller equipment as needed when working on or around utilities.
  • Inspects and checks equipment before and after use, performs minor maintenance activities and reports exceptional problems to supervisor
  • Frequently assumes crew chief responsibilities in coordinating the activities of maintenance persons, helpers, and/or other equipment operations
  • Will be required to work on call shifts and overtime as required.
  • Occasionally confers with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor
  • Reads and understands reference books and complicated procedures such as street/utility plans and equipment operation manuals
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Completes daily work order tickets
  • Performs Flagging duties as needed
  • Performs On-Call duties as assigned
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three years' experience in operation of light to heavy equipment.

OR
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
  • Skilled in the operation of backhoe, skid steer loader and dump truck
  • Ability to load truck with track hoe or track loader
  • Basic working knowledge of excavation equipment and procedures
  • Ability to read construction plans and grade stakes
  • Ability to rake and roll asphalt
Preferences:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Prior Four years? experience in construction equipment (motor grader, backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, etc.)
  • Experience with track mounted equipment
  • Experience or willingness to learn to operate haul truck/end dump
  • Class A CDL with tanker endorsement
Conditions of Employment:
  • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tank Vehicle endorsement and a good driving record OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
  • Must pass a physical examination
  • Must be able to perform duties in confined spaces
  • Must be able to work 8-24hr shifts for snow/ice sanding
  • Must be able to work overtime when requested

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the use of backhoe, dump truck, bobcat, dozer, track hoe, asphalt roller, motor grader, and other compaction equipment; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) issued by City of Denton that may include gloves, hard hat, safety goggles/eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and uniforms.

Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are performed in various types of weather from extreme cold to extreme heat.
