Job Description:
  • The Hematology/Oncology Physician provides full-time outpatient and limited inpatient hematology/oncology clinical services at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facility. This is a contract-based, on-site clinical role (1.0 FTE) requiring adherence to federal healthcare standards, VA policies, and strict regulatory compliance.
  • The physician will deliver comprehensive patient care in alignment with VA, Joint Commission (TJC), and nationally recognized hematology/oncology standards.

  • No on-call or after-hours responsibilities
Work Schedule
  • Standard hours: Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 4:30/5:00 PM
  • Annual workload: approximately 1,992 clinical hours
  • Required daily presence in clinic during operating hours

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
  • Provide comprehensive hematology and oncology evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Manage outpatient hematology/oncology clinics
  • Provide inpatient consultations when required
  • Participate in admission, treatment planning, and discharge coordination
  • Conduct end-of-life care discussions and advanced care planning
  • Coordinate care with primary care and specialty providers
Patient Management
  • Ensure timely evaluation and follow-up of VA patients
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning
  • Provide perioperative and consultative support when applicable
  • Monitor treatment outcomes and adjust care plans as needed
Documentation & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical records in VA electronic health systems
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • HIPAA
    • VA Privacy Act (38 U.S.C. regulations)
    • Joint Commission standards
    • VA clinical documentation policies
  • Ensure all patient records are properly documented and secured

Clinical Standards
  • Delivery care consistent with:
    • American Society of Hematology (ASH) guidelines
    • Joint Commission (TJC) standards
    • American Hospital Association (AHA) standards
    • VA healthcare clinical protocols

Coordination & Communication
  • Communicate effectively with VA healthcare teams
  • Coordinate care transitions and discharge planning
  • Provide updates on patient status and treatment progress
  • Report on clinical issues or delays in service delivery to VA representatives
Quality & Performance
  • Participate in performance monitoring and quality improvement processes
  • Adhere to VA clinic wait time standards
  • Support continuous improvement of patient care services
  • Participate in morbidity and clinical review discussions when required
Required Qualifications
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology
  • Active and unrestricted medical license (U.S.)
  • Experience in inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology care
  • Ability to work in VA or federal healthcare systems preferred
Security & Compliance Requirements
  • Must pass federal background investigation (VA suitability screening)
  • Must comply with VA Directive 6500 (information security)
  • Must complete mandatory VA cybersecurity and privacy training
  • Must handle Protected Health Information (PHI) in compliance with HIPAA
  • Must use VA-approved secure systems and encryption protocols
Additional Requirements
  • Must be physically present on-site during scheduled hours
  • Must sign in/out and comply with time tracking requirements
  • Must participate in VA credentialing and privileging process
  • Must adhere to all VA policies regarding patient care and conduct
  • No external billing permitted for VA-covered services

Performance Oversight
  • Performance monitored by Contracting Officer Representative (COR)
  • Subject to annual CPARS performance evaluation
