The first Hudson River vehicular tunnel was opened in 1927. It was considered an outstanding engineering achievement, whose principles are employed to this day. The Holland Tunnel was designated a National Historic Civil and Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1984 by the American Society of Civil and Mechanical Engineers.
