Merced College is seeking a dedicated mathematics faculty member to join the 39 faculty in the School of STEM and contribute to the mission of the Rising Scholars program. As a member of our collaborative mathematics department, you will provide critical academic support to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students, helping them earn transfer degrees and prepare for further education.

This position involves teaching primarily within the Rising Scholars program at carceral sites, utilizing in-person, online, and hybrid formats. We seek a candidate committed to student success who will contribute to curriculum development and program assessment. Our comprehensive mathematics curriculum prepares students for seamless transfer to four-year universities in a wide range of disciplines. Beyond the classroom, faculty actively engage students through programs like MESA and events such as the Student Math League.

Salary Schedule:

  • Position's initial maximum salary placement is 101,887*

All successful candidates with doctorates will receive both the two step placement and the doctoral stipend

General Description:

This is a full-time, tenure track instructional assignment at Merced College under the general direction of the Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The professor will teach a variety of courses. The specific mix of teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester. The standard teaching load is 15 units per semester, which may include face-to-face, distance education, evening and weekend hours.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Provide innovative and effective instruction in accordance with current pedagogy and established course outlines and expectations
  • Inform students about course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance policies and maintain regular and substantive contact with students
  • Maintain and submit required student attendance and scholastic records on the Learning Management System (e.g. grades and syllabi)
  • Utilize the Learning Management System to deliver, prepare, and grade class assignments and examinations
  • Maintain and utilize effective skills in instructional design, applications, and methods
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum
  • Participate in the development of teaching-learning methods and materials
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees
  • Represent the college within the Merced community and within professional circles
  • Participate in the colleges learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments to continually improve student learning outcomes

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • Masters Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics

OR

  • Bachelors degree in either of the above AND Masters Degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education from an accredited institution

OR

  • the equivalent
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students

Preferred:

  • Teaching experience in mathematics.
  • Education and/or expertise in adult learning theory and practice.
  • Current technology skills related to teaching in the discipline and a willingness to pursue future technological developments.

Health Benefits

The cost is $12.00 per month for 10 months each year, with no deductions in June and July. This amount covers the following services, provided that members use Plan providers:

  • Medical (Anthem Blue Cross)

$100 deductible for each family member or $300 deductible per family paid by employee each calendar year. 100% coverage after deductible is paid (except for emergency room visits which cost $100 unless the person is admitted to the hospital).

  • Prescription (Navitus)

Pharmacy costs are $3.00 for up to a 30-day supply of generic medications and a $15.00 co-payment for brand-name medications; at Costco, a 30-day supply of generic medications and a 90-day supply by mail are $0.00, while brand-name medications cost $15.00 for a 30-day supply and $35.00 for a 90-day supply.

  • Dental (Delta Dental - Incentive Plan)

  • Plan pays 70% the first calendar year that the plan is used

  • 80% paid second year

  • 90% paid third year

  • 100% paid fourth year

  • 100% will be paid each year thereafter unless member does not visit the dentist each year for cleanings/check-ups.

  • $1,700 maximum per calendar year, per person, in network.

  • Vision (VSP)

$5.00 co-pay for exam every calendar year. The plan pays $150 for frames, anything over $150 is paid by the member. Single vision, lined bifocal and lined trifocal lenses are covered in full.

  • $50,000 life insurance policy on employee
  • Short-term and long-term disability.

Retirement (State Teachers Retirement System - STRS)

  • Members prior to 1/1/13 - 10.250% and the college pays 19.10%
  • Members after 1/1/13 - 10.205% and the college pays 19.10%
  • The District and the employee do NOT pay into Social Security

Sick Leave

  • Ten (10) days per year for 175 day contract.
  • Eleven (11) days per year for 189 day contract.
