ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill temporary Recreation Worker II positions with the ASES After School Program. The program operates in conjunction with the Galt Elementary School calendar; therefore, ideal candidates will be available to work consistently throughout the school year. Shifts are scheduled each school day and typically begin approximately 15 minutes before student dismissal.

NOTE: This position requires a high school diploma and either 48 college units or an Associate's Degree. If the 48-unit or degree requirement is not met, the District's Instructional Assistant Exam must be taken and passed to fulfill the qualifications and continue in the selection process.

Under direct supervision, employees in this "at-will" classification perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks.

Example of Duties

Depending on assignment, typical duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide support services to department staff.

  • Promote a safe environment for both staff and patrons.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of community recreation programming, youth development, and/or special event coordination as assigned.
  • Safe work practices and procedures applicable to recreation facilities, and public events.
  • Applicable City policies related to assigned programs.
  • Customer service principles and techniques for working effectively with diverse populations.
  • Basic record-keeping practices and standard office procedures.
  • Proper use and care of tools, equipment, both orally and in writing.

Ability to:

  • Work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgement.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, vendors, and the public.
  • Supervising, directing, and motivating participants in recreational programs.
  • Monitoring activities to ensure compliance with safety rules and program guidelines.
  • Responding appropriately and calmly in emergency or high-stress situations.
  • Performing multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Operating standard office equipment, point-of-sale systems, and basic computer software.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including standing for extended periods, lifting equipment, bending, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Supplemental Information

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education and Experience:

  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of college (48 units), OR - A.A. degree (or higher), OR - Pass the District's Instructional Assistant Exam.
  • One (1) year of experience in recreation programming or a closely related field. Experience leading activities or directing the work of others is highly desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of Adult, Child, & Infant First Aid/CPR/AED Certification, within six (6) months of date of hire.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old at time of hire.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

City of Galt is authorized and required by the state of California to access Local, State, and/or Federal criminal history as part of the testing process. This process can be completed by initial fingerprinting and/or a full background investigation pursuant to Penal Code §11105(b) (10), §11105.3, §13300(b) (10); Education Code §10911.5; Public Resources Code §5164) and in compliance with the City of Galts Fingerprinting Policy and Procedure.

As a future employee or volunteer, you are required to be fingerprinted, processed, and cleared through the Department of Justice and cleared before you can start. All information obtained will be kept in strict confidentiality.

Must have a current and valid TB Test pursuant to Public Resources Code 5163.

Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical.

Depending on assignment, may require possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Depending on assignment, must possess strength, stamina and mobility to work indoors in an office setting/recreational facility or to perform required work out doors including: frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces; lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; use of standard office equipment and/or recreation equipment including a computer and handheld devices; constant use of overall vision; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. May supervise children and be required to kneel, sit in low chairs, or sit on floor for prolonged periods. Must be willing to work out doors in all weather conditions with possible exposure to loud noise, traffic, and potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to chemicals, fumes and other environmental substances.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities. Work may be occasionally performed indoors. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents.

At-Will Employment

A Temporary Employee is an at-will employee assigned to work in a position for six hundred (600) hours or less per calendar year. Employees appointed to positions designated at-will means that both the employee and the City have the right to terminate employment at any time, with or without advance notice, and with or without cause. At-will employees have no access to administrative grievance and/or disciplinary appeals procedures described and explained in this Manual. The terms and conditions of employment for full time at-will employees will be outlined in a personal services contract executed upon appointment. Part-time and temporary employees are at-will with the terms of employment outlined in the "At-Will Statement" signed at time of hire. Nothing in the City of Galt Personnel Manual, the "At-Will Statement", or in an employee's contract shall limit the right to terminate employment at-will.

Paid Sick Leave

In Accordance with the Healthy Workplace Healthy Families Act of 2014, the City of Galt provides paid sick leave for all employees. Effective January 1 2024, temporary employees shall accrue paid sick leave as provided for in SB 616 and amendments to the California labor code section 245.5. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every thirty (30) hours worked.

Deferred Compensation

Temporary employees are not eligible to receive any City provided employee benefits, except participation in the Citys 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and as provided by applicable law. The employee may elect to have any amount of money up to the legal limit withheld from their regular paycheck and placed in a deferred compensation plan in accordance with Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Social Security Program

Temporary employees participate in an alternate plan called the Public Agency Retirement Services Alternate Retirement System 457 Plan (PARS ARS 457).

State Disability Insurance

The City participates in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) and is funded through employee payroll deductions.
