Description of Basic Functions and Responsibilities

The Shasta College Physical Plant department is seeking to build a pool of qualified applicants for substitute utility work. We will respond to applications based on our current needs.

To perform a variety of utility functions by assisting in the general maintenance and cleaning of campus buildings, grounds, and facilities and by assisting in warehouse and delivery operations. May also assist with skilled trades including pool and laundry work, grounds, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, and painting. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability

Typical Duties:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of a Facility Support Services I.
  • Performs a variety of custodial, warehouse, and delivery functions as well as semi-skilled duties in maintenance and pool operations as assigned by supervisor
  • Picks up and delivers supplies, furniture, equipment, and mail
  • Picks up and delivers items as requisitioned by various departments
  • Processes paperwork for various delivery services
  • Wraps and packs articles for shipping and storage
  • Loads, unloads, and carries objects within reasonable weight
  • Assists pool and laundry with daily tasks
  • Coordinates e-waste recycling.
  • Safely and effectively works on ladders, scaffolding, rigging, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, booms, and roofs of varying heights
  • Monitors and provides maintenance of solid waste diversion and recycling
  • May oversee the training of student workers assisting with the sorting of solid waste and recyclables
  • Sets up, moves, and arranges furniture, equipment, etc. for offices and special events
  • Assembles and delivers prefabricated furniture as assigned
  • As assigned by supervisor, assists in major maintenance and repair projects through oversight of skilled trades' personnel
  • Assists with warehousing operations including receiving, recording, and taking inventory of supplies; operates a forklift as needed
  • Performs custodial tasks including emptying trash and recycling receptacles, cleaning restrooms, and sweeping/cleaning walkways, athletic courts, and general facilities
  • Maintains security of campus buildings and grounds makes routine checks, locks buildings, etc.
  • May get called in, above and beyond work scheduled hours, for emergencies or to set-up and take down weekend events
  • Communicates maintenance issues to supervisors and peers timely and effectively.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with custodial staff and the college community
  • Assists in washing of District laundry as assigned
  • Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required

Knowledge of:

  • General facility maintenance processes and procedures. in an institutional setting
  • Warehousing operations and methods
  • Hazardous Communications and MSDS processes and procedures
  • Basic pool testing and commercial laundry service
  • Custodial operations
  • Modern cleaning methods, and safe use of materials, tools, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial operations
  • Semi-skilled trades
  • Safe use of hand tools and basic power tools used in semi-skilled maintenance operations
  • Safe driving practices and policies
  • Proper care and maintenance of custodial equipment and tools
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills demonstrating tact, patience, and courtesy

Ability to:

  • Effectively and safely use custodial equipment in performing assigned work
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of all required duties
  • Work effectively with people from diverse age, gender, race, ethnicity, religious, ability, sexual orientation, and other populations
  • Obtain a valid Forklift Operator's Certification
  • Perform a variety of delivery and general utility duties with skill and efficiency
  • Read and write at a level required for successful job performance
  • Safely perform duties at varying heights (ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, roofs etc.)
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions

Experience/Education

Education Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience Required:

  • One year of experience in general maintenance and/or custodial/janitorial operations.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Experience Preferred:

  • Experience in shipping, receiving, warehousing, semi-skilled trades, and delivery functions

Possession of:

  • A valid and appropriate California Driver's License
