Job Description Summary:

The Facilities Management Team is an integral element of the Business Services and

Organizational Excellence team and serves to create, maintain, and continuously

improve the William & Mary physical environment to enable excellence in teaching,

research, and public service.

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for providing basic repair and maintenance services across the university campus and some incidental support for basic electrical

and plumbing repairs. Examples of work include but are not limited to hanging blinds, installing air conditioner window units, replacing ceiling tiles, painting, whiteboard hanging, picture hanging, minor carpentry work, assembling furniture, and installing paper towel dispensers and other wall fixtures.

Job Description:

Salary: $37,0000 to $40,000 commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.

  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the maintenance trade.

  • Ability to learn and perform general maintenance or carpentry repairs.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

  • Valid Driver's license and two years of driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Products (Word, Outlook, etc.)

Conditions of Employment:

  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • This position may require overtime including scheduled and unscheduled, nights and weekends, and or holidays.

  • This position has been designated as essential to the operation of the department, will require reporting to work when the University is officially closed, and is subject to overtime.

Duties:

80%- General Maintenance Repairs:

  • Performs minor carpentry work in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of floors, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens, wood fixtures, and furniture.

  • Replaces floor and ceiling tiles.

  • Repairs tables, chairs, benches, and counters.

  • Hangs pictures, whiteboards, chalkboards, and other wall hangings.

  • Occasionally paints, stains, and varnishes finished woodwork and sheetrock/plaster.

  • Install window air-conditioning units. Assembles office equipment and furniture.

  • Escorts contractors/repair technicians.

  • Provides general support to Carpenter Shop & Facilities Management.

  • Replaces trim, paneling, and cove bases.

  • Supports parts and material purchases, primarily by obtaining these items at the vendor location.

  • Installs accessory hardware fixtures.

  • On-the-job training to further knowledge and experience in the Carpentry and General Maintenance Trade.

15%- Work Administration:

  • Performs sight inspections to decide on means and methods of task accomplishment with general guidance from the supervisor.

  • Decides on materials and parts required to complete tasks and orders parts from the storeroom.

  • Coordinates schedules and appointments with customers.

  • Responds to emergency calls.

  • Fills out time sheets for work performed and documents work orders as required by Facilities Management.

5%- Other:

  • Performs other duties as assigned in an expeditious and professional manner.

  • Provides event support (such as helping to create flags, signage, and banners).
