A Student Attendant is required to work under the supervision of a School Principal or designate to provide supports to students with physical challenges, health issues and/or complex medical needs. The Student Attendant attends to personal medical, and/or physical care needs of students, some of whom have cognitive challenges as well. A willingness to work collaboratively with a support team consisting of parents and both education and medical professionals is an important and necessary component of this position.

Specific Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Providing personal/physical/medical care of students;
  • Feeding, dressing and undressing, toileting, daily hygiene, diabetic procedures and monitoring, responding to and monitoring of health conditions;
  • Assisting with student mobility and physical exercises;
  • Lifting and transferring students;
  • Supporting students in their participation in activities in the school and community;
  • Promoting a healthy and safe environment.

Qualifications must include:

  • Grade 12 or GED equivalent and successful Completion of a recognized Resident Care Worker course;
  • Current First Aid and CPR training;
  • Demonstrated ability and/or training working with children with physical, intellectual, and medical challenges;
  • Good physical condition and the ability to lift and transfer student;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Able to work as part of a team;
  • Ability to read instructions and write/document clearly and appropriately;
  • Physical ability to implement strategies;
  • Experience working in early childhood education would be considered an asset;
  • NVCI training is preferred.
