Job Description

Job Title: Cooling Canal Hoist Operator
Shift: 1st
Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Pay Rate: $15.00 per hour

Job Purpose
The Cooling Canal Hoist Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently removing thermally processed product from the cooling canal using hoist equipment. This role ensures product integrity, adherence to food safety standards, and smooth workflow between processing and unloading operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate the cooling canal hoist to lift and transfer retort kettles from the cooling canal to retort carts 
  • Position empty retort carts at the end of the canal platform prior to product removal 
  • Accurately maneuver hoist controls (up, down, forward, reverse) to safely lift, transport, and lower kettles 
  • Ensure proper alignment of kettles over carts while maintaining safe working distance 
  • Verify autoclave tape has changed to the correct indicator (white with black stripes) before releasing product 
  • Immediately stop operations and notify management if autoclave tape is missing or has not changed 
  • Remove hoist hook and safely disengage equipment after kettle placement 
  • Transport filled carts to the designated unloading area 
  • Stage empty carts for continued production use
Additional Duties
  • Assist Whallon loader and unloader operators as needed, including: 
    • Positioning carts 
    • Guiding uncooked product carts to staging areas 
  • Transfer empty retort kettles between pallets and carts using general hoist procedures 
  • Maintain clean and organized work area 
  • Follow all safety, quality, and operational guidelines 
Frequency of Tasks
  • This process is performed every time a kettle is removed from the cooling canal post-cook
Safety & Compliance Responsibilities
  • Follow all safety procedures when operating hoist equipment 
  • Maintain proper distance from suspended loads at all times 
  • Ensure verification of thermal processing indicators (autoclave tape) before handling product 
  • Report any equipment issues or safety concerns immediately 
  • Comply with company policies and food safety regulations
Qualifications
  • Ability to safely operate hoist equipment (training provided) 
  • Strong attention to detail, especially regarding safety and quality checks 
  • Ability to follow step-by-step procedures consistently 
  • Good communication and teamwork skills 
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, guiding, and moving equipment
