    JOB TITLE:  Surgical Tech/Certified Surgical Tech/LPN Scrub Tech


    JOB HOURS:  FT & On Call Shifts        
        

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Surgical Technologists are allied health professionals with specialized education who function as members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.  LPN Scrub Techs are LPN that receive on-the-job training.  In collaboration with the surgical team members providing surgical care to patients, they ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.  They will work within their scope of practice.

    The Surgical Technologist reports directly to the RN circulator, charge nurse and/or team leader.
     
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Education:
    a.) Graduate of Surgical Technologist program accredited through CAAHEP or LPN with on-the-job training. 
    2. Licensure/Certification:
    a.)  Graduated from a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program, and if applicable, current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
    b.)  BLS certification required within 6 months of employment.     
         
    3. Work Experience:
    a.) Successful completion of hospital orientation


    RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB DUTIES:

    1. Gathers checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Sets up the sterile back table and mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure.   

    2. Performs the surgical scrub, donning and doffing of gown and gloves and personal protective equipment, and assists gowning/gloving others. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.    

    3. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization at the end of case.   

    4. Demonstrates teamwork through communication, cooperation, coordination, and conflict resolution with others and implementing multidisciplinary actions to provide a continuity of care. 

    5. Provides for accurate care and handling of specimens. 

    6. Follow all standards and policies providing safe patient care as in surgical counts, handwashing, sterile consciousness, time outs and debriefs, etc.

    7. Other duties as assigned.

     personally, and professionally, and to improve one's skills in order to deliver 
     the best possible care for our customers.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    1. Direct patient contact, possible exposure to infections, communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens.

    2. Occasionally exposed to radiation and electromechanical hazards. 

    3. Works indoors in well-lighted and ventilated environment. 

    4. Handles emergency or crisis situations.

    5. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. 

    6. Subjected to frequent interruptions.

    7. Comply with ADA guidelines. 

    8. On call response time as dictated per unit policy.
