Position Summary:

To clean, maintain, and secure the facility and supporting structures of the school district by performing the following duties, as well as other duties as assigned by the supervisor deemed for the wellbeing of the district.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent education and/or experience.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to operate and maintain appropriate tools and equipment.

Must possess a valid NJ Driver's License.

Must be in possession of a valid Black Seal Boiler Operator's license or higher or must maintain license within six (6) months after hire date.

Job Goal:

To provide custodial services, individually or as a member of a crew and to perform maintenance tasks as assigned.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Performs daily housekeeping/ cleaning assignments (i.e. classroom, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, multipurpose rooms, hallways, grounds, etc.) as directed by the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, Principal and/or Head Custodian.
  • Prepares site for daily operation (doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc,) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational, hazzard free and from potential liability.
  • Displays US Flag during school hours on days when the district is in session.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non school hours when the building is in use.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making minor repairs and reporting major repairs to head custodian or supervisor immediately.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the head custodian or supervisor.
  • Licensed custodians are to monitor and log boiler operation as per state law anytime boilers are operating.
  • Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, waste, recycling materials and debris.
  • Check and report vandalism
  • Clean up after accidents or illness
  • Restock supplies in the restrooms
  • Properly remove all trash and garbage as directed and observe all policies,procedures and laws for the disposal of trash and waste materials.
  • Care for the building floors and carpets in an efficient manner
  • Observe all rules of upkeep of assigned equipment to include but not limited to regular cleaning and scheduled services.
  • Perform outside work including grass cutting, pruning and trimming of shrubs and trees, weeding and snow removal as needed.
  • Inform administration of repairs requiring work orders
  • Replace light bulbs as needed
  • Monitor the heating, cooling and air supply temperatures, communicating when issues or concerns arise.
  • Must be available to perform emergency snow and ice removal and respond to other emergencies that may arise to provide safe arrival and departure at all district sites.
  • Must be able to use the following equipment: wet vacuum and mops, carpet extractor, vacuum, scrubber/buffer, hand truck, hand tools. auto scrubber, dolly, ladder, lawn equipment, snowblower, snow shovel, lawnmower, pruner,and edger. Any other equipment that may be deemed necessary to complete assigned duties.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, Supervisor of Building and Grounds or Superintendent

Technology Skills:

Ability to use Google Suites, computer use for work orders and communication.

Evaluation of Performance

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the New Jersey Administrative Code and Board of Education policy.

Physical Demand

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, sit, move, speak and write. Ability to use ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and district vehicles. Ability to lift 60 pounds and move heavier material when necessary.

Noise level may be high when operating power equipment. During these conditions, appropriate district personal protective equipment such as hearing protection must be worn and used in accordance with manufacturer's directions and district training. Employees may be required to work in restricted spaces which may include crawling and/or climbing heights. Required to stand, be on their feet and move around for a full work shift.

Specific vision abilities required for this position include being able to see color, far and close distances, peripheral and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus. Staff members are required to properly use safety equipment as is required and/or appropriate to the work and to prevent injury to self and others.

Ability to communicate effectively in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone. Ability to use the computer equipment to complete reports, generate service orders, and maintain inventories or other communications as directed by your supervisor.

While performing the duties assigned to this position, the employee will occasionally work in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Shoveling snow, chipping ice and operating mechanical equipment in these conditions. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious material or illness during the course of duties.

Terms of Employment

12-month contract, MEA contract, renewed annually. Salary and benefits as determined by the Board of Education and any applicable collective bargaining agreement.
