Job SummaryPosition is responsible for creating a classroom environment to develop an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms using skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the students interests and abilities and to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.Essential DutiesTeaches courses in art utilizing curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities.Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Newport News Public Schools.Develops lesson plans to include a balanced art program and organizes daily class time so that instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.Adapts the curriculum to provide individual small group or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student compatible with the divisions basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course SOL standards.Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing painting and modeling using standard and teacher prepared instructional aids.Evaluates academic and social growth of students prepares report cards and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports checklists census forms and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly productive classroom environment.Instructs students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning health and attitude problems.Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.Supervises students in assigned out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students work for the school and the community.Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff parents and the public.Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsMust have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone to enter data into a computer to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels outdoors and on the telephone speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms outdoors and on the telephone physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to bend stoop climb stairs and reach overhead.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
