Assistant Principal

JOB GOAL:
To assist in the overall leadership of providing a 21st century instructional experience that helps students to master subject matter and skills in order to become civically responsible and are college and career ready
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Valid Educator License issued by the Mississippi Department of Education with endorsement codes 486
- A minimum of three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience
- Adherence to policies, procedures, and guidelines set forth by the Hazlehurst City School District, Mississippi Department of Education (MDE), and other specified agencies
General Responsibilities
- Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school
- Serves as principal in the absence of the regular principal
- Works with the principal in scheduling classes and extra-curricular activities
- Assists in the preparation of student schedules and/or teachers
- Works with department heads and faculty in compiling the annual budget requests
- Helps to requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment, conducting inventories, maintaining records, and checking on receipts for such materials
- Assists in the conducting of safety inspections and safety drill practice activities
- Assists in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services
- Cooperates in the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and works with the attendance supervisor for investigative follow-up actions
- Assists in maintaining discipline throughout the student body, and deals with special cases as necessary, all the while affording the students due process rights
- Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups and committees as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives
- Performs such record-keeping functions as the principal may direct
- Assists in the evaluation of staff members and support personnel
- Assists in maintaining favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and to solicit support for overall school objectives and programs
- Assists in maintaining and controlling the various local funds generated by student activity
- Attends special events held to recognize student achievement and attends school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events
- Assists in establishing and maintaining a favorable learning climate
- Assists in the development, revision, and evaluation of curricula
- Assists in fostering good interpersonal relationships among students and staff
- Keeps abreast of trends, developments, and research as they relate to education and school operation. Support division philosophy initiatives and programs
- Assists in the coordination and supervision of guidance services;
- Helps supervise curriculum planning; makes studies of curriculum in cooperation with department heads, team leaders, grade-level chairpersons, and central office representatives; Performs related work as required
Communication
- Uses appropriate grammar and syntax - verbal and written
- Communicates pertinent information from meetings, conferences, and other sources in a timely and accurate manner
- Provides a monthly calendar for communication with the Superintendent, faculty, and staff
- Demonstrates courtesy and impartiality in relationships with faculty, staff, and other associates
- Provides an opportunity for faculty and staff input and incorporate their recommendations into the decision-making process

Parents and Community
- Communicates school and organizational goals to parents periodically throughout the school year
- Listens effectively to the ideas, grievances, and complaints of parents and make a reasonable effort to resolve such issues
- Informs the community about school and organizational goals throughout the school year
- Provides current information on promotion/retention requirements, graduation requirements, and testing schedules
- Communicates the special academic needs to parents such as being at-risk of failure on a required state test, etc.
- Promotes parental involvement
- Performs any other tasks as required by the Superintendent of Education, the Assistant Superintendent, and the designee of the Superintendent
