A Child Nutrition Assistant/Custodian performs dual roles, spending part of the day preparing and serving student meals according to USDA guidelines, and the remaining time maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the cafeteria and kitchen facilities. These vital support roles keep school nutrition operations running smoothly and safely.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Food Preparation: Assist in the preparation, assembly, and portioning of daily breakfast and lunch meals in institutional quantities.
- Meal Service & Cashiering: Serve food on the line, operate point-of-sale (POS) systems, count money, and process student meal transactions.
- Compliance: Ensure all meals meet federally reimbursable meal requirements and follow strict food safety and temperature protocols.
- Inventory: Help receive date all food and supplies, rotate food, paper products, and cleaning supplies in storage areas.
Sanitation & Custodial Duties
- Facility Maintenance: Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, dish rooms, dining tables, floors, and food service equipment.
- General Upkeep: Sweep, mop, and wax floors, clean kitchen restrooms, empty trash and recycling receptacles.
- Safety: Monitor for maintenance problems, handle cleaning chemicals safely, and ensure high-touch areas are disinfected.
Qualifications & Physical Demands
- Education: Requires a High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience: Prior experience in institutional food preparation, food handling, and general custodial/maintenance work is usually preferred.
- Physical Requirements: This is a heavy physical labor role. Candidates must be able to stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs.
