ENGLISH TEACHER
Under the principals direction, the English Teacher teaches one or more classes in communications, arts, literature, speech, writing, and related areas, and assists in other school duties as assigned.
I. Major Duties and Responsibilities
- a. Performs duties in accordance with District and State school policies and/or laws.
- b. Teaches courses in English to secondary pupils utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- c. Teaches expository and creative writing, literature, speech, drama, debate, reading, English mechanics, and spelling that are suited to needs, educational development, and interests of youth.
- d. To promote the fullest possible development of skills, attitudes, knowledge, and conduct of each individual so that he/she may live effectively as a responsible member of our society.
- e. Provide for reading and discussion of literature, intra-scholastic and classroom outlets for writing, dramatics, and related art group studies which pupils can experience the give and take of working together, formal lessons, activities designed to reinforce and develop reading, writing, and speaking skills.
- f. Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the School District.
- g. Provides individual and small group instructions in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the pupil with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
- h. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment.
- i. Creates with the assistance of pupils interest centers and displays with material to enhance learning.
- j. Evaluates each pupils interest centers and displays with material to enhance learning.
- k. Participates with the principal or his/her designee to mutually develop the system by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with the Districts uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessment.
II. Other duties and responsibilities
- a. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and supplies and maintains required inventory records, may request resources, speakers, and field trips.
- b. Communicates with parents and school personnel to discuss the individual pupils progress.
- c. Identifies pupils needs and cooperates with other professionals and staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health attitudes and learning problems.
- d. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- e. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school or assignment and/or on a District level. May teach under modular or flexible scheduling plans.
- f. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
- g. Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, and/or other paraprofessionals.
- h. Attends all faculty inservice and articulation meetings.
- i. Perform other duties such as yard and duty as assigned by the school extra-duty roster.
- j. Supervises co-curricular activities such as student supervision at athletic events, club sponsorships, and dance duties as assigned.
- k. Assists in writing goals and performances in his/her teaching assignments and relevant School and District levels assigned.
