Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is now accepting applications for a Part-Time (up to 4.5 hours per day) Special Education Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) position that is available in the division for the 2026-2027 school year.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) works with students with disabilities to help them maintain their present level of functioning and gain the highest level of functional independence for educational access. The COTA provides occupational therapy services under the direction and supervision of a registered Occupational Therapist. Treatment includes, but is not limited to, treatment in self-help skills, play and leisure skills, sensory motor skills, cognitive skills, and the use of adaptations to increase independence. The COTA contributes and participates in assessment, intervention and documentation of therapy services provided. The COTA may provide suggestions to teachers on ways to adapt the learning environment to remove obstacles challenging students with disabilities under the direction of the Occupational Therapist.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a registered occupational therapist assistant (COTA) certified by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
  • Must be eligible to obtain licensure through the Virginia Department of Health Professions
  • Have at least one year of practical experience in the area of occupational therapy
  • Have experience and expertise in using technology in education
  • Have experience in fostering an inclusive learning environment
  • Have experience or working familiarity with Google Drive for instruction, collaboration and course work
  • Have effective written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with parents and families
  • Demonstrate the ability to work and collaborate with a team of other teachers
  • Ability to be dependable and punctual

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Established pattern of good work attendance
  • Adequate physical strength (ability to handle and lift students with severe physical disabilities)
  • Experience with technology and equipment necessary for the needs of students
  • Knowledge of routine occupational therapy practices

FLSA: Exempt

SALARY: $25,650.00 - $44,977.43 annually; commensurate with experience
