The Hoboken Public Schools are seeking qualified candidates to continue supporting student achievement in the absence of regular classroom teachers on a per diem basis as Substitute Teachers. Successful candidates will exhibit an interest in education and excellent verbal communication skills.
Certification Qualifications
One of the following: Valid NJ County Substitute Teacher Certificate (60 or 30 credits) or a: Valid NJDOE Teacher Certification

School Day Responsibilities & Requirements:
Substitute Teacher Responsibilities and Requirements
Substitute teachers play an essential role in maintaining continuity of instruction and supporting the educational environment within the district. All substitute teachers are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities and requirements:
Work Schedule and Attendance
- Substitute teachers are expected to work the full school day, from 8:15 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
- Each school day consists of eight (8) instructional periods and one (1) lunch period.
- Substitute teachers are expected to report to their assigned school on time and remain on site for the entire workday unless otherwise directed by administration.
- Substitute teachers must work at least one (1) Monday and one (1) Friday per month in order to remain on the active substitute list.
- Substitute teachers who call out five (5) times during the school year may be removed from the active substitute list.
- Substitute teachers who accept an assignment and fail to report without notice (no call/no show) will be removed from the active substitute list.
District Assignment Expectations
- Substitute teachers are employees of the district and may be assigned to any school or program within the district based on staffing needs.
- Substitute teachers are expected to accept assignments at any district location.
- Refusal of an assignment based on school location may result in removal from the active substitute list.
- By accepting substitute employment, the substitute acknowledges and understands that assignment locations are determined by district needs.
Professional Responsibilities
Substitute teachers are expected to:
- Follow all lesson plans, schedules, and instructions provided by the classroom teacher and/or school administration.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Supervise students at all times, including during transitions, arrival, dismissal, lunch, and other assigned duties.
- Enforce school and district rules, policies, procedures, and student code of conduct.
- Take attendance accurately and report absences according to school procedures.
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, staff, parents, and administrators.
- Leave written notes for the regular classroom teacher regarding lessons completed, student behavior, and any concerns.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, staff matters, and district operations in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
- Use district technology, instructional materials, and resources appropriately and responsibly.
- Immediately report student injuries, emergencies, safety concerns, or disciplinary issues to school administration.
- Dress in professional attire appropriate for a school setting.
Performance Expectations
- Substitute teachers are expected to demonstrate reliability, punctuality, flexibility, and professionalism.
- Failure to adhere to district expectations, policies, attendance requirements, or professional standards may result in disciplinary action, including removal from the substitute teacher list.
