Job Description

Essential Elements

PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Under the principals direction and as part of a secondary teaching assignment, the Physical Education Teacher teaches one or more classes of physical education and assists in other school duties as assigned.

I. Major Duties and Responsibilities

• a. Performs duties in accordance with District and State school policies and/or laws.
• b. Teaches courses in Physical Education to secondary pupils utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
• c. Attends Physical Education Workshops and keeps abreast of new innovations.
• d. Sees that equipment is kept in good repair.
• e. Supervises all class activities.
• f. Provides instruction in the prevention of injuries.
• g. Provides first aid in injuries with compliance to State and District policy.
• h. Issues, collects, and accounts for all equipment.
• i. Keeps a record of all fitness tests and compiles norms for year to year.
• j. Issues and keeps a record of locks and locker numbers, combinations, and serial numbers.
• k. Promotes athletic and recreational programs.
• l. Requests equipment for physical education programs.
• m. Promotes recreation among the faculty and other adults.
• n. Promotes health campaigns.
• o. Prescribes exercises.
• p. Gives guidance to students in health, social, vocational, and athletics.
• q. Keeps a record of all individual students results of each test, posts such results so it can be seen and examined by students.
• r. Works at improving school facilities for a continued improvement in Physical Education programs.
• s. Strives toward a good rapport with classroom teachers and the relationships with students, class work, and physical fitness obtained in Physical Education.
• t. Delegates responsibilities to class members and encourages leadership.
• u. Participates with the principal or his/her designee to mutually develop the system by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with the Districts uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessments.
• v. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment.

II. Other Duties and Responsibilities

• a. Selects and requisitions books, instructional aides, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records. May request resource speakers and field trips.
• b. Communicates with parents and school personnel to discuss the individual pupils progress.
• c. Identifies pupils needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
• d. Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
• e. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school or assignment and/or on a District level. May teach under the module or flexible scheduling plan.
• f. Performs basic attendance accounting and business services as required.
• g. Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, and/or other paraprofessionals.
• h. Attends all faculty in-service and articulation meetings.
• i. Performs other duties such as yard and bus duties as assigned by the schools extra duty roster.
• j. Supervises co-curricular activities such as students supervision at athletic events, club sponsorships, and dance duties as assigned.
• k. Assists in writing goals and performance objectives in his teaching assignment and relevant school and District levels as assigned.
