BUILDING(S):
This is an itinerant position with the primary location at Marshall High School. This position will support buildings throughout the district (Marshall and Albion) requiring travel between sites, as needed.
SUMMARY:
The Spanish teacher is responsible for the planning instruction and/or adoption of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. The teacher's role is to motivate each student to develop competencies, knowledge and skills in aurally comprehending, speaking, reading and writing a foreign language in accordance with each student's ability; to interpret to students the culture of the countries where foreign language is spoken; and to discover and develop special talents of students in foreign language communication. The teacher will also coordinate and deliver comprehensive Englisher Learner (EL) services across the district.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Position requires a valid Michigan Secondary teaching certificate with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in Spanish (FF) based on completion of a group major (or group minor with successful completion of Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)).
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a K-12 endorsement in English as a Second Language (NS)
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructional
- Build trust and confidence with students
- Teach skills and knowledge in foreign language instruction to students, utilizing courses of study and course level expectations adopted by the Board of Education
- Develop lesson plans, instructional materials and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students
- Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas
- Develop student understanding and appreciation of culture in countries where a foreign language is spoken
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive classroom environment
- Evaluate student progress in aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing (where necessary) the foreign language in relationship to the level being taught; report progress on appropriate report card forms
- Administer group standardized tests in accordance with the district testing program
- Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and / or self-selected professional growth activities
- Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and to interpret the school program
- Participate in curriculum development programs and in faculty committees
- Maintain discipline in and out of the classroom
Student Services (ESL)
- Coordinate and provide English Learner (EL) instructional services for students across the district
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to support language development and academic achievement
- Develop individual language support plans based on student needs
- Monitor student progress and recommend appropriate instructional interventions
- Provide direct and/or consultative ESL support services
Assessment and Compliance (ESL)
- Coordinate all English Learner identification, placement, and exit procedures
- Administer and coordinate WIDA assessments, including WIDA Screener and ACCESS for ELLs
- Maintain accurate student records and ensure compliance with state and federal reporting requirements
- Monitor English Learner progress toward language proficiency
- Provide guidance and professional learning opportunities for staff regarding effective instructional strategies for multilingual learners
- Collaborate with principals, counselors, intervention staff, and classroom teachers regarding student placement and services
- Support communication with multilingual families, including coordinating translation and interpretation services when appropriate
- Assist with program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts
Program Management (ESL)
- Maintain required documentation for English Learner services
- Assist in developing and implementing district procedures for English Learner education
- Coordinate scheduling of EL services to maximize instructional effectiveness
- Ability to move between multiple district buildings as needed
Other
- Demonstrate an understanding of the district's mission, vision and strategic priorities and actively works to advance them through daily practice and professional conduct
- Contribute to the culture and climate of the district by modeling its core values, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment and serving as a committed representative of the district's identity and purpose in all interactions with students, families, staff and the broader community
- Meet all contractual obligations as outlined in the Marshall Teachers' Association Master Agreement
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents
- Perform other related duties that may be assigned by the building principal
