Job Description Essential Elements Print TEACHERS OF SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special Education Teachers are responsible to the principal for care, control, and instruction of the students in their charge within a suitable learning environment.

The duties and responsibilities of the Special Education Teachers are to:

  • Assist with the parent and other required professionals in the development of each pupils Individualized Education Program in compliance with current laws.
  • Implement each pupils Individualized Education Program as agreed upon.
  • Approach learning with an understanding of emotional involvement which affect the learning capabilities of children.
  • Take into consideration the implications of neurological, emotional, and physical impairments as they may affect learning capabilities and emotional judgment.
  • Recognize the inter-relationship of physical and emotional maturity and its relationship to instruction.
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents to develop and maintain their understanding of the Individualized Education Program and its effectiveness.
  • Become acquainted with existing pupil records and update them as required, and to provide whatever other information is requested by the parent.
  • Use techniques to more effectively encourage pupils to improve in the areas requiring amelioration.
  • Assist in maintenance of an ongoing inservice training program for both regular and special education teachers.
  • Act as a resource person to other District and school personnel and also interpret special education programs to regular classroom teachers in the District.
  • Cooperate and communicate with other District and school personnel and also interpret special education programs to regular classroom teachers in the District.
  • Attend job-related meetings and activities specified by the Director of Special Education for the special education program or the principal of the schools served as teaching assignment permits.
  • Give direction to the aide assigned to the teacher toward the end that the aide becomes an effective paraprofessional teacher.
  • Operate within the established organizational pattern of the schools served.
  • Fulfill additional duties assigned by the District administration and/or principals of the schools serviced.
