Description: Speech-Language Pathology-Assistant (SLP-A)

Terms of Employment: 10 month position (temporary if hired after contractual start of the school year)

Position Summary

The Capital School District is seeking a collaborative, student-centered Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) to support the delivery of speech and language services for students across educational settings under the direction and supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP).

The SLPA assists in implementing speech and language intervention plans designed to support student communication, participation, and access to the general education curriculum. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills, professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to inclusive educational practices that support the diverse needs of students.

Services provided by the SLPA will align with district expectations, Delaware Department of Education regulations, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requirements, and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) guidelines. SLPA Certification Handbook is attached.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Implement speech and language intervention activities and therapy plans developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist.
• Support students in the development of articulation, expressive language, receptive language, pragmatic language, fluency, voice, and functional communication skills.
• Assist with the implementation and support of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems and assistive technology tools.
• Facilitate communication opportunities within classroom routines, small groups, therapy sessions, and natural educational environments.
• Collect and maintain student performance data related to therapy goals and instructional activities.
• Prepare therapy materials, visual supports, instructional resources, and communication systems for student use.
• Maintain service documentation, logs, and records in accordance with district procedures and compliance requirements.
• Collaborate with teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families to support student communication needs across settings.
• Support specially designed instruction (SDI) and communication access within inclusive educational environments.
• Participate in professional learning opportunities, department meetings, and district initiatives as assigned.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, district expectations, and ethical standards.
• Perform additional duties related to speech and language support services as assigned by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist or building administration.

Required Qualifications

• Associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or completion of an approved Speech-Language Pathology Assistant preparation program aligned with ASHA requirements.
• Eligibility for or possession of Delaware licensure/certification as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant.
• Eligibility for or possession of ASHA Certified Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (C-SLPA) credential preferred or required based on Delaware regulations.
• Completion of required supervised fieldwork/practicum experiences consistent with ASHA standards.
• Ability to work under the direction and supervision of a licensed and ASHA-certified Speech-Language Pathologist.
• Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students with diverse communication, developmental, behavioral, and academic needs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in school-based or pediatric settings.
• Experience supporting students utilizing AAC systems and assistive technology.
• Knowledge of inclusive educational practices, specially designed instruction (SDI), and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
• Experience working with preschool and school-age populations.
• Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary educational teams.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
