SALARY: $59,280-$71,576 ANNUALLY

POSITION SUMMARY:

Implement comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor or Associate degree in Nursing
  • Valid Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, scoliosis, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings
  • CPR Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures

Experience:

  • Two years nursing experience, preferably in a school setting

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Nursing Services

  • Evaluate and provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.
  • Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
  • Administer First Aid/CPR/AED when necessary.
  • Evaluate and assess staff condition during medical emergency situations only, providing emergency-level intervention as appropriate. This role does not include routine or ongoing medical care for staff.
  • Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications as prescribed according to state law and district policy.
  • Perform state-mandated vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings and refer students as needed. Enter screening data for state reporting by the district deadlines.
  • Evaluate students for communicable diseases/conditions and follow state reporting and exclusion requirements.
  • Perform health procedures for students with health needs per physician orders.
  • Develop and implement individualized health plans (IHPs) for students.

Instruction

  • Participate in the evaluation and review of campus health education curriculum.
  • Provide healthcare education to individuals and groups as requested.
  • Provide or coordinate campus staff training and education related to health services.
  • Provide diabetes training to staff throughout the district.

Consultation

  • Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
  • Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
  • Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, 504 team, crisis team, and school committees.
  • Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.

Administration

  • Review, evaluate, and maintain student immunization records in compliance with state immunization requirements.
  • Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate nursing staff in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  • Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
  • Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality following FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
  • Complete AED checks monthly of all building on campus.
  • Complete Stop the Bleed Kits checks monthly for expiration and replacement in all buildings.
  • Serve on the SHAC (Student Health Advisory Council).
  • Serve on the Safety and Security Committee.
  • Participate in the preparation of Emergency Operations Plans for the school and district.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Professional Development

  • Maintain certification in CPR, and as a health screener (vision, hearing, and scoliosis).
  • Maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Texas Nurse Practice Act, the Texas Board of Nursing, and K-12 Texas public school training requirements.
  • Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct the work of assigned nurse aide(s) and LVNs.
  • EQUIPMENT USED:

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermometer, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.
