General Function:

Assists the Athletic Director in overall program management of athletics for the assigned high school. Assists with interpreting and enforcing NMAA and district rules and regulations regarding interscholastic competition and eligibility. Assists with supervising all school personnel in the Athletics Department.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent. Coaching license or ability to obtain proper licensure within 90 days of hire. Prior experience as a head coach for a high school athletics program (3 years minimum) strongly preferred and/or leadership and/or supervisory experience in related fields.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree in physical education or a directly related field, sports management, or another related field. Experience in organizational management.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated knowledge of the overall operations of an athletic program. Demonstrated knowledge of state and NMAA policies governing athletics. Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, and public relations skills required to achieve the goals of the position. Demonstrated ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to de-escalate and resolve conflicts. Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a timely manner, verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and personnel. Technology skills, including the ability to use email, the internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google programs. Ability to incorporate technology to maintain the operations of the program, including the use of the sfps.info Athletics and Activities website pages and any software needed to run the athletics program. Capacity to meet the physical demands of the position.

Essential Job Functions:

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:

  • Assists with directing and managing all school-assigned athletic programs and athletic venues.
  • Assists with preparing and administering an operational budget that ensures the needs of the school athletic department are met and that the department functions within prescribed budgets.
  • Works closely with the Athletic Director and the school site principals to ensure that all coaching vacancies are filled with qualified staff.
  • Verifies all student-athlete eligibility and requirements are met for participation.
  • Maintains a school athletic program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development that follows NMAA and SFPS rules and regulations.
  • Ensures that student progress is evaluated on a regular, systematic basis, and the findings are used to make the athletic program more effective.
  • Ensures coaches and athletic programs are evaluated for effectiveness on a regular, systematic basis, and the findings are used to make the athletic program more effective. Assists coaches with personal development and program growth.
  • Assists with preparing and approving all interscholastic game schedules and ensures prompt communication regarding any changes.
  • Assists with arranging transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
  • Assists with school athletic events by directing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities.
  • Regularly attends and supervises sports events on weekdays and weekends. Acts as a mediator for any disputes, problem solves game day issues, works with the Athletic Director, site admin, and officials to resolve any issues.
  • Attends any conferences or meetings as the district representative as requested.
  • Assists with coaches' meetings and attends parent meetings for each program.
  • Networks for college and career advancement opportunities for student-athletes and coaches.
  • Assists with evaluations of head coaches and required documentation for the season.
  • Oversees the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all athletic equipment.
  • Assists with maintaining a current inventory of supplies and equipment; recommends disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary.
  • Coordinates with the district security department to ensure adequate security at all home events.
  • Maintains a professional relationship with media sources and engages in community outreach.
  • Acts as a liaison with the middle school athletic coordinator and assists with middle school programming.
  • Assists with investigating any infractions and makes recommendations to the Athletic Director on possible action.
  • Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Salary Range:

$63,189 to $67,875+

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):

A wide variety of instructional materials and resources, including electronic/digital equipment. Standard office equipment and a vehicle for districtwide travel to meetings and school sites.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations at times bending, squatting, and reaching. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds. The ability to lift, carry, and push up to 50 pounds. Frequent trips by automobile to school sites and departments as required. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and private automobile.

Environmental Conditions:

Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Possible district and statewide travel. An office space with low to moderate noise levels. Presence on athletic fields, in the gymnasium, and at other sporting venues.

  • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to prevent muscle strain/injury.
