General Function:

Providing a safe working environment for district personnel, students, and visitors by assuring compliance with all Federal, State, and Municipal mandates with regard to Crisis Response, Critical Incident Management, National Incident Management System, and Incident Command System. Works with General Services to help identify potential safety hazards and oversees safety training for district employees. Oversees the Safety Aide program and Safety Aides.

Education/Training/Experience

Minimum: Five (5) years of experience in some combination of risk management, facility security, safety training, school emergency preparedness, and school emergency management or minimum of two years as a Lead Safety Aide with the Santa Fe Public Schools.

Preferred: Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University, and three (3) years of experience in some combination of risk management, facility security, safety training, school emergency preparedness, and school emergency management.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of issues, standards, and guidelines related to school emergency preparedness and management, including the National Incident Management System and Incident Command System.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before administrators, staff, parents, and students.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of instructions furnished in writing, verbally, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in the field of multi-hazard emergency planning for schools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  • Knowledge of all district requirements and school board of education policies related to safety and risk management.

Essential Job Functions

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the organization's needs. Current essential functions include the following:

Salary Range and Benefits:

$65,000 to $80,000+. Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):

Standard office equipment including computers, phones, copy machines, etc. Various computer programs (Google Apps for Education, Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop, PowerSchool). Automobile travel to school sites and/or meetings may be required.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Working at desk, walking between offices. Visual acuity for extended periods of time reviewing numbers and documents. Regularly required to stand; move throughout offices; communicate verbally and electronically; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to travel to various school sites or meetings throughout the community.

Environmental Conditions:

Most work is performed in an indoor setting with long periods of sitting and extensive computer and phone usage. Requires light physical exertion, including some walking, bending, reaching, and lifting. Travel to various district sites.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Propose and develop information, policies, and procedures related to crisis response, emergency preparedness, and mitigation.
  • Assume responsibilities of Executive Director of Safety and Security in his or her absence.
  • Oversee safety improvements at schools (i.e., fencing, camera upgrades and placement, fire panels, etc.)
  • Assist with Threat of Harm assessments and training.
  • Conduct ICS training for the District and individual schools
  • Assess and improve the District's Emergency Command Centers
  • Assist with internal investigations
  • Respond to safety and security concerns at schools (narcotics, fights, missing child, etc.)
  • Provide supplies to schools and district buildings when needed for emergencies and school safety
  • Attend Board of Education meetings
  • Facilitate the district safety committee, monthly meeting of school and community representatives (law enforcement, fire, health, private agencies, hospital, etc.).
  • Facilitate the district safety steering committee, monthly meeting of top-level school administrators responsible for safety and security oversight.
  • Ensure that state-mandated emergency drills (shelter in place, lockdown, off-site evacuation) are conducted at all school and office sites annually.
  • Ensure that state-mandated fire drills are conducted at all school and office sites annually.
  • Ensure that each school and administrative site has a functional crisis response team following the protocol of the district crisis response plan and national incident management system and Incident Command System.
  • Verify that crisis response plan flip-charts are in all classrooms and offices.
  • Update and revise the district crisis response plan annually.
  • Assist with safety audits throughout the district.
  • Manage the radio communication system to ensure schools have working equipment and trained users.
  • Maintain and verify the inventory list of two-way radios used in all schools and at the district level for emergency communications.
  • Maintain and monitor a two-way radio base station.
  • Conduct debriefings after significant incidents and events throughout the district.
  • Ensure that any non-public offsite indoor evacuation sites have required temporary liability insurance from the district.
  • Develop emergency preparedness plans, train personnel, and regularly evaluate and update the plans.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director of Safety and Security or designee to discuss the status of the schools as it relates to crisis readiness, crisis response, and crisis mitigation.
  • Communicate regularly with school administrators, law enforcement agencies, and the Santa Fe city/county fire department.
  • Help identify funding sources for emergency preparedness supplies (lockdown buckets, safety vests, grab-and-go bags, etc.)
  1. Help identify ways to engage students and parents in emergency preparedness.

  2. Serve as an alternate point of contact for campus crime stoppers, referring reports to the appropriate administrator, tracking follow-up, and directing promotion of the program throughout the district and to parents.

  3. Update district website page for safety and security, ensuring bilingual content.

  4. Update SFPS parent/student handbook with necessary safety/security information, ensuring bilingual content.

  5. Develop effective ways to recognize and award contributions to safety and security by students, staff, and parents.

  6. May be involved with investigations related to employee fraud, theft, security breaches, and provide required reporting of such incidents.

  7. Respond to after-hours calls from staff and/or contractors.

  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
