The General Music (General Music/Choir) Teacher is responsible for providing general music instruction to students. At the middle school level teaching choir is also included. This role involves planning and delivering engaging lessons that promote music appreciation, rhythm, melody, and music theory. The teacher will introduce students to a variety of musical genres and basic performance techniques, fostering an environment where students can develop their musical talents.

  • Plan and deliver age-appropriate general music lessons that introduce students to music theory, rhythm, melody, and various musical genres.
  • Lead rehearsals, focusing on developing individual and group performance skills.
  • Actively participate in the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process as outlined by the district, collaborating with colleagues, contributing to shared goals, monitoring student progress, and supporting continuous improvement within the department.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive environment that encourages student participation, creativity, and a love of music.
  • Assess student progress in general music (also choir in middle school) providing feedback to support individual growth.
  • Organize and participate in school music performances, concerts, and events.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to integrate music into other subject areas as appropriate.
  • Create and implement curriculum and lesson plans that align with state and district music standards.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying musical abilities.
  • Promote music appreciation and lifelong learning through engaging and diverse musical experiences.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, performances, and events.
  • Serve as a positive role model.
  • Remain free of alcohol and illegal substances in the workplace in accordance with Board policy.
  • Understands and follows District safety protocol and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal, Associate Principal(where applicable) or District Administration.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of music theory and general music education.
  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons for both general music.
  • Classroom management skills to maintain a positive, productive, and safe learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to assess student performance and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Experience in organizing and leading school music performances, concerts, and events.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying musical abilities.
  • Knowledge of music education standards and best practices for general music
  • Organizational skills for maintaining equipment, and lesson materials.
  • Ability to foster a love of music and encourage student participation and creativity.
  • Strong collaborative skills for working with other educators and school staff.
  • Flexibility to integrate music with other subjects and accommodate diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies, including assisting students with accidents

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) certification for Music Education (K-12), which includes qualifications for teaching both general music and choir at the Middle School Level.
  • Previous teaching experience in music preferred
  • Experience leading and organizing school music performances, concerts, or events is also beneficial.
