ROLE AND PURPOSE

The primary responsibility of the deaf education teacher is to provide academic instruction which will enable the deaf and hearing impaired students to access the curriculum as determined by the Admission Review and Dismissal committee with an emphasis on language and communication skill development.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: Bachelors degree from an accredited university required
• Certification: Valid Texas teaching certificate in Deaf, Hard of Hearing EC-12 and Generalist
• TASC: Texas Assessment of Sign Communication or equivalent

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Knowledge of Deaf and Hard of Hearing instructional services, including:
• Auditory and listening skills training
• Oral speech modeling and reinforcement
• Vocabulary and language development using visual modality and oral aural methods (e.g. Visual Phonics)
• Use of Total Communication to provide instruction through SEE sign language modality
• Use and maintenance of amplification equipment
• General knowledge of academic instruction in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science
• Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Instructional Strategies:
• Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the districts curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation
• Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning
• Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative guidelines
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students
• Conduct regular assessments of students as indicated by the RDSPD Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
• Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
• Work with other members of the RDSPD staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district guidelines
• Communicate with students in signed English during instruction
• Provide communication access to students who are deaf and hard of hearing at all times, interpreting
• Provide an oral emphasis for students as specified in the IEP using oral-aural instructional techniques
• Provide instruction in the State Adopted Extended Core Curriculum for students receiving instruction from a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing
• Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides, interpreters, and volunteers
• Use instructional technology to strengthen teaching and learning
• Student Growth and Development:
• Help students analyze and improve study methods
• Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal means
• Participate as a member of the Admission Review and Dismissal Committee
• Document student progress on IEPs
• Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as Sponsor of outside activities approved by the campus principal
• Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students
• Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student needs
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and
• Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
• Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, RDSPD administrator, principals, and
• Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community
• Provide consultation and collaborate with ECI staff, otologists, audiologists, sign language interpreters, and other agencies

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

• Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills
• Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
• Keep informed of and comply with the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf Shared Service Arrangement
• Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom management
• Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents
• Attend and participate in professional development opportunities, such as:
• SEE Skillshop
• Deaf Education Professional Learning Communities
• Visual Phonics as opportunities arise
• Statewide Conference for the Deaf as opportunities arise

DUTY DAYS187Additional Job Information This position receives a $3,000 year stipend. This is a pooled position. It is open year round, even if no current openings exist.
