The Mechanic / Substitute Bus Driver / Dispatch Support position is responsible for maintaining district vehicles in safe operating condition and providing transportation services for students to and from school and school-related activities. This position also assists with transportation dispatch operations and supports the overall efficiency and safety of the transportation department.
Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Meet all Washington State school bus driver qualifications and licensing requirements. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid school bus driver authorization. Clean driving record. Ability to read and interpret safety information, hazardous material labels, technical manuals, schematics, diagrams, and repair documentation. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team. Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Valid First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain certification. Successful completion of Washington State Patrol and FBI criminal history background checks. Ability to pass all required Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examinations.
Preferred Qualifications Recent successful experience as a school bus driver. Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Two or more years of mechanic experience. Experience working in a school transportation environment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Commitment to treating all students with dignity and respect. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Dependable, flexible, and solution-oriented. Positive attitude and sense of humor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
Transportation Operations Safely operate school buses and other district vehicles for regular routes, field trips, extracurricular activities, athletic events, special education transportation, and other assigned transportation services. Conduct and document required pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Check engine oil, coolant levels, belts, and other critical systems prior to operation and report deficiencies. Safely operate vehicles during adverse weather conditions, including snow, ice, fog, high winds, and heavy rain. Assist with dispatch operations and radio communications as assigned. Instruct students and passengers on emergency procedures. Assist students with disabilities and other passengers as needed during loading and unloading. Maintain appropriate student management and safety procedures while transporting passengers. Comply with all traffic laws, state regulations, district policies, and CDL requirements. Maintain required licenses, certifications, physicals, and driver abstracts. Immediately report all accidents, incidents, injuries, and vehicle damage.
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Inspect and maintain buses and fleet vehicles to ensure safe operation and compliance with applicable regulations. Perform body repairs, including reshaping, filling, welding, soldering, sanding, and painting. Operate and maintain shop equipment, including battery chargers, compression gauges, torque wrenches, dial indicators, welders, drill presses, grinders, tachometers, and timing lights. Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
General Responsibilities Safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials and bodily fluids in accordance with district procedures and safety regulations. Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Support department operations and assist with additional duties as assigned. Participate in required training and professional development activities.
Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Ability to sit for extended periods while operating vehicles. Ability to work in noisy, busy, and changing environments. Ability to operate vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment safely. Ability to work in varying weather and temperature conditions. Frequent use of hands, arms, legs, and repetitive motions. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy objects. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, ramps, and vehicle access steps. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, and perform other physical movements required for vehicle maintenance. Ability to perform heavy physical labor, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Ability to hear and communicate effectively with or without reasonable accommodation.
Evaluation Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and established evaluation procedures for classified employees.
Responsible To Transportation Supervisor
Hours: 08:00am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, 260 days per year
Terms of Employment Salary, benefits, and working conditions are established in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the Toutle Lake School District and the Public School Employees (PSE) Union.
