2026 Service Through Student Success:Afterschool Tutoring

The VISTA project will expand access to tutoring and academic resources for K-8 youth in Baltimore's 21217 community by building a sustainable, community-based tutoring system. SFNC identified this priority through its direct experience serving 21217 families, ongoing student participation and academic data from The Power Project, feedback from families and school/community partners, and its longstanding assessment of community needs. The project will benefit approximately 100 K-8 students participating in The Power Project, with priority given to students demonstrating the greatest academic need. By strengthening the infrastructure behind tutoring services, the project will improve SFNC's ability to respond to student needs, monitor academic progress, engage volunteers and community partners, and provide consistent support throughout the school year. The VISTA's efforts will create systems and resources that extend beyond the service year, strengthening The Power Project's long-term capacity to provide high-quality academic support and advance educational outcomes for youth in West Baltimore. Member Duties : The project will focus on building a sustainable tutoring program that provides students with consistent, individualized academic support. The VISTA will help establish a consistent, sustainable tutoring system that expands access to one-on-one and small-group academic support. Key activities will include recruiting and developing tutors, identifying and organizing evidence-based instructional resources, creating student progress-monitoring systems, developing individualized support strategies, and documenting procedures to support long-term program implementation. VISTA will work closely with program staff, students, families, volunteers, and community partners to ensure tutoring services respond to student needs.
