About:

This intensive summer school course is designed for recently arrived newcomer students (recent to two years in the country). Students will be grouped by grade level band (K-12) depending on student enrollment. The overarching goal will be to build and develop grade-level academic and social English language skills for students. Attention will be given to differentiating instruction based on each student's individual language development level. Position contingent on the enrollment numbers of students.

General Function:

Education/Training/Experience:

Specializing in English Language Development, the selected candidate serves as the lead teacher supervising a team of 4-6 teachers who run the Newcomer camp. Provides an atmosphere that allows teachers and students to have the opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth. Responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program and for providing supervision of a program that will result in language development and student achievement in accordance with each student's ability. Responsible for providing timely feedback to teachers and/or students.

Minimum: New Mexico Teaching License, Level 2 or 3 (Elementary or Secondary)

Preferred: TESOL Endorsed. Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Candidates should be knowledgeable in best practices, common core state standards, WIDA ELD standards, and NM state/SFPS priority standards. Candidates must be able to work with others and be able to follow curriculum requirements. Basic computer skills (MS Office/web-based applications) are required, and the ability to teach virtually if required. The candidate should be willing to participate in training and professional development with SFPS Language and Culture coaches. Candidates should understand and embrace best practices for language development. Candidates must have good interpersonal skills with students and be willing to work closely with families. Additionally, candidates must be able to create a safe and welcoming environment for students who have recently arrived in the U.S.

Essential Job Functions:

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, and facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District. Current essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Adhere to school and district policies.
• Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of students enrolled in the after-school program.
• Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for students.
• Establish and maintain a safe and welcoming classroom environment that focuses on student growth, progress, and mastery of content.
• Supervise students outside of the classroom as needed.
• Ensure accurate attendance records are maintained in a timely fashion.
• Communicate frequently and honestly with the program administrator regarding student progress and areas of concern.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Salary Range:

$52.00 per hour

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand and move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Uses hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in a school setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), outdoors on school playgrounds and parking areas, and may require personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people.
