Position Summary

The Para Educator/Math Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising the Math levels and preparing Para Educator students to pass the Math portion of the ParaPro test. The Math Teacher will be serving a class of approximately 20-25 adult students. Students range in age and previous education; English is the second language for some of our students. Students are working towards earning the ParaPro credential that will lead to employment as a Para Educator in a school district. To this end, The Math teacher is responsible for teaching a range of Math topics. Experience teaching Math to adult learners is required. It is essential that the Math teacher has had training in and successful experience teaching explicit Math strategies.

This program is a collaborative effort of the Reading/Writing Teacher and the Math Teacher. It is expected that both teachers meet weekly to plan and implement the curriculum, discuss students'' matters and provide support to ensure successful completion of program. Furthermore, the teacher will collaborate closely with the Director and Program Administrator to ensure program goals are met. The teacher must collect and submit attendance records, document student progress, and assist with other DESE-related activities.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Prepare lesson plans and choose appropriate materials, following the ABE Department's Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards, and submit one lesson plan per month.
  • Meet weekly with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan, implement and monitor the Para Educator curriculum and provide individualized support to students in the program.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings and appropriate in-service workshops.
  • Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
  • Complete attendance and assessment-related activities as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Work effectively with other teachers, counselor(s), the program administrator and Director on student and program issues.
  • Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans. Integrate digital literacy into instruction, including using Aztec software for additional practice.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree; Masters in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience - at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus
  • MAPT certification is preferred but not required for this position

Weekly Schedule:

  • 3 mornings per week
  • Teaching Hours: 6
  • Preperation Hours: 1.5
  • Monthly meetings, third Thursday of the month, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
  • Salary shall be commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with the Somerville Educator''s Union collective bargaining agreement
