Published Description: Pay: $55 per hourPosition SummaryThe Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher provides specialized physical education instruction to students with disabilities whose Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) indicate a need for adapted physical education services. The APE Teacher assesses motor development, designs individualized physical education programs, and delivers instruction that promotes physical fitness, motor skill development, coordination, social interaction, and lifelong physical activity.The APE Teacher collaborates with special education staff, general education teachers, therapists, and families to ensure students receive meaningful access to physical education in accordance with federal and California state special education regulations.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesAssess students referred for Adaptive Physical Education using standardized and non-standardized motor assessments.Determine eligibility and need for APE services as part of the special education evaluation process.Develop measurable goals and objectives related to physical development and motor skills for students’ IEPs.Provide direct Adaptive Physical Education instruction to students with disabilities across grade levels (TK–12).Adapt and modify physical education curriculum, activities, equipment, and environments to meet diverse student needs.Promote development of:Gross motor skillsBalance and coordinationStrength and enduranceMotor planning and body awarenessSocial interaction through movement activitiesCollaborate with general education PE teachers to support inclusion when appropriate.Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions.Maintain accurate documentation, progress monitoring, and compliance with special education timelines.Provide consultation to teachers, paraprofessionals, and staff regarding appropriate adaptations and strategies.Ensure student safety during all physical activities and maintain appropriate supervision.Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and participation.Maintain and organize adaptive equipment and instructional materials.QualificationsEducationBachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Adapted Physical Education, or related field requiredMaster’s degree preferredLicensure / Credentials (California)Valid California Teaching Credential in Physical Education OREducation Specialist credential with Added Authorization in Adapted Physical EducationAdapted Physical Education Added Authorization (APEAA) required or ability to obtainValid CPR/First Aid certification preferredKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of motor development and physical activity adaptations for students with disabilitiesUnderstanding of federal and state special education laws including IDEAAbility to adapt activities for students with a variety of disabilities including:Autism Spectrum DisorderOrthopedic impairmentsIntellectual disabilitiesMultiple disabilitiesPhysical and health impairmentsStrong collaboration and communication skillsAbility to collect and analyze student performance dataKnowledge of inclusive physical education practicesWork EnvironmentWork is performed in indoor and outdoor school environments including gyms, fields, playgrounds, and multipurpose rooms.Position may require physical activity including demonstrating exercises, lifting equipment, bending, standing, and assisting students with mobility.Physical RequirementsAbility to demonstrate physical activities and exercisesAbility to move and lift adaptive equipmentAbility to supervise students in active environments#INDEDU1Job Types: Full-time, Contract, TemporaryBenefits:Dental insuranceHealth insuranceLife insuranceVision insuranceWork Location: In person Discipline: Adapted PE TeacherSpecialty : SchoolStart Date: 19-Aug-2026Length of Contract : Duration of School YearShift: DaysHours: 7Estimated Gross Pay: null
