JOB DESCRIPTION Special Education Teacher - A.T.L.A.S. Transition Program General Responsibilities: Responsible for assisting with and implementing special education instructional programs, specifically dealing with transition. Responsible for providing direct service to students with disabilities ages 18- 22. Essential Duties: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) • Facilitates transition programming (administers career skill and interest inventories, conducts career exploration activities, provides lessons in functional academics, and facilitates vocational programming) for students who are eligible for special education services and for whom the IEP team has established transition goals and objectives. • Coordinates and cultivates relationships between school and community work -based learning opportunities. • Act as liais on between the school and community agencies to coordinate the transition of students with disabilities from school to the community and post -secondary options . • Provide technical assistance to special education teachers in assigned schools to support skill s taught in the school setting are relevant to the work setting . • Assist in reviewing the development and implementation of individualized educational programs (IEPs) in assigned schools to support LRE; this includes data collection and progress reporting. • Collaborates with all stakeholders to assist with the planning and coordination of the transition from high school to ATLAS, as well as the transition to adult services for students beyond their twenty -second birthday. • Conduct, analyze and report on fol low-up surveys required for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Indicator 14 Report. • Conducts transition assessments based on students' individual needs, including collecting data in community settings to ascertain employment interest and aptitude. • Attends administrative meetings and work sessions as required, and attends professional seminars, conferences, and workshops as required by the position. • Serves as a resource to families, parents, and students in accessing transiti on services as well as providing information about transition topics. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • At least three years of successful full -time teaching experience in the area of transition or secondary education for students with disabilities is pref erred. • Demonstrate in- depth knowledge of transition programming and processes for students with disabilities at the secondary level. • Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to be effective in helping students learn. Education and Experience: A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Required: • Bachelor's Degree in Education • MA certification in Moderate Disabilities Grades 5- 12 • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of service providers to meet students' individual needs • Certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or willingness to become certified within the first thirty days of employment • Possession of a 7D Driver's License or a willingness to obtain a 7D Driver's License in the first year of employment Preferred: • Master's Degree in Education • Prior experience in supporting transition services in a public school environment • A record of successful full -time teaching experience • MA certification as a Transition Specialist Terms of Employment Work Schedule: 198 Days (182 days in the school year ; additional days to be determined by the supervisor ) Salary Scale: Teacher Special Requirements: A valid MA Driver's License with the ability to transport students to/from community locations is preferred Physical requirements and Disclaimer Physical Conditions: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear , handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Minimal ability for a wide range of motion to include climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and manipulating. May involve repetitive motions and long periods of sitting at a desk or computer and long periods of standing.
