Position Summary

The Department of Public Health Sciences invites applicants for a Full-time, 9-month, Tenure-Track, Assistant/Associate Professor of Public Health. The position begins in July 2027.

The Department of Public Health Sciences, part of the College of Health Sciences, advances public health as both a scientific discipline and a practice-based profession. We offer CEPH-accredited BS Public Health and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs, graduate certificates in Applied Mindfulness and Integrative Health, minors in Contemplative Studies and Health Sciences, among other undergraduate, minor, and certificate programs. Faculty engage in research, community partnerships, and innovative pedagogy that integrate classroom learning with applied practice experiences. The ideal candidate is a dynamic teacher-scholar with practice-based experience in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), complementary and integrative health, and public health; and a research agenda that complements the department's mission. This person will teach across our undergraduate and graduate programs, advise students, maintain an active research agenda, engage in service at multiple levels at the university, and cultivate community partnerships. The faculty member will demonstrate the ability to bring practical, applied experience that strengthens community partnerships, mentoring, and workforce preparation; Use innovative and inclusive teaching practices to meet the needs of diverse learners; Develop and maintain research and scholarly productivity; Collaborate across disciplines within the College of Health Sciences, the university, and with community partners.

This is a full-time, 9-month appointment. There is potential for summer and winter session instructional opportunities.

Responsibilities include:

• Teach undergraduate/graduate applied mindfulness and public health courses in approved modalities
• Develop and sustain a program of research and scholarly activities that leads to peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and external funding when appropriate
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research and scholarly activities, practica, and professional development
• Serve as the Graduate Coordinator for the Applied Mindfulness and Integrative Health Graduate Certificate Programs and as the director for the Contemplative Studies Minor
• Advise undergraduate/graduate students and support student success
• Engage in service to the department, college, university, public health profession, and community
• Serve on the advisory board for the Center for Contemplative Studies
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• A doctorate in Public Health or a closely related discipline. ABD may be considered - must be completed by start date.

• Ability to teach four or more courses with content substantially like these courses offered at WCU:

• Experience teaching in multiple modalities (i.e., face-to-face, online, hybrid) and approaches (didactic and experiential)

• Demonstrated record of practice and research in one of the following areas:

• Applied public health

• Complementary and integrative health

• Health education and wellness promotion

• Community-engaged research and program evaluation

• Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate public health courses

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated use of responsive, high-impact educational practices; and/or
• Active program of research with peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations; and/or
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students in research or practicum; and/or
• Formal training, certification, or substantial practice-based experience in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or a related evidence-based mindfulness intervention; and/or
• Demonstrated experience developing or delivering contemplative, mindfulness, or integrative health programming in community or applied settings
