Job Title: Controls EngineerJob Description

A leader in aluminum sorting technology is seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to join their engineering team. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on environment and enjoys solving complex automation challenges. The Controls Engineer will support the design, development, and improvement of automated systems, control panels, and machinery used throughout operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop control panels for custom machinery, ensuring compliance with internal standards and industry regulations.
  • Modify, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC programs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms).
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams to integrate controls into new and existing equipment.
  • Interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to support machine builds and upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety standards, and best practices in industrial automation.
  • Support installation, wiring, and commissioning of automated equipment on the production floor.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment issues to minimize downtime and improve system reliability.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to automation, efficiency, and system performance.

Essential Skills

  • Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in industrial controls engineering, preferably in manufacturing or machine building.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming and modification (ladder logic, function block, structured text).
  • Strong understanding of electrical codes (NEC, NFPA 70E, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience wiring machines and control systems.
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics using CAD tools.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with automated sorting systems or material-handling equipment.
  • Familiarity with VFDs, sensors, and industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Profibus, etc.).
  • Knowledge of machine safety standards (ISO, ANSI, or OSHA).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work independently with minimal supervision.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.29 - $60.10/hr.
