Job Code: 36834

Job Location: Wilmington, MA

Job Schedule: 9/80

Job Description:

This position plays a critical role in the building and delivery of our world‑class space‑based telescopes. As a low‑volume, high‑mix manufacturer operating much like an advanced development organization, we rely on team members who bring strong critical thinking, exceptional hands‑on capability, and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges.

In this role, you will work closely with a cross‑functional team of manufacturing engineers, design engineers, and program managers to assemble, test, and deliver precision optical and electro‑mechanical hardware for space applications. Because much of our work involves first‑time builds and evolving documentation, we're looking for someone who excels in dynamic, development‑driven environments where curiosity, adaptability, and technical rigor are essential.

This position is part of the L3Harris Imaging Division site in Wilmington, MA which has produced and continues to produce optical equipment for many customers both commercial and government, including NASA. One of the many NASA space exploration programs that this business supported was NASA's New Horizons spacecraft (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/images/index.html). Imaging Division Wilmington designed and built the telescope that flew on this spacecraft and took the first close pictures of Pluto and several of the outer planets' moons. There are many other interesting programs that this business has supported and continues supporting!

Essential Functions:

  • Work under moderate supervision while setting clear objectives and priorities within your job area.
  • Meet operational targets including schedule adherence, quality requirements, and cost expectations.
  • Influence decisions related to assigned projects by applying technical judgment and build‑floor insights.
  • Read, understand, and follow build documentation-including drawings, schematics, CAD references, and written or verbal instructions-to complete tasks compliant with program and company standards.
  • Perform hands‑on assembly and test work across electronic, mechanical, electromechanical, and optical domains.
  • Construct, calibrate, adjust, troubleshoot, and maintain components, devices, systems, and related equipment as required by the program.
  • Conduct alignment checks, perform calibration activities, and make modifications or replacements following engineering direction.
  • Prepare or work with required compounds, adhesives, and solutions as part of precision assembly processes.
  • Operate test equipment, execute prescribed tests, gather performance data, and document results in the required formats.
  • Support the build of complex prototypes and first‑article hardware, contributing to continual improvement of processes and documentation.
  • May be required to learn Precision Cleaning (space grade cleaning) or Painting.
  • This position will require training on 1st shift hours for approximately the first 4 weeks prior to starting second shift hours.

Qualifications:

  • Requires fully proficient job knowledge/skills. Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience or 2 years post-Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Top-Secret clearance.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Optical assembly experience.
  • R&D lab experience.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing Principles.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in Massachusetts is $62,500 - $116,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. L3Harris also offers a variety of benefits, including health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements.
