The 2nd Shift Quality Control Technician serves as a key point of contact for end-of-day specimen reconciliation and quality assurance within the laboratory. This role ensures that all samples are accurately processed, verified, and accounted for prior to laboratory closure. The position requires a high level of independence, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills during the evening shift.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proficiency in data entry, specimen processing, and quality control functions, including a full understanding of all job duties and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to accessioning, preparation, and reconciliation.
- Receive and accession incoming specimens during the closing shift by completing electronic requisitions, printing barcodes, and entering data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Validate specimen information, patient demographics, billing details, and test orders for accuracy; report inconsistencies to laboratory leadership.
- Identify and resolve specimen-related issues, including missing information, complex test-to-specimen relationships, and compliance concerns.
- Track and monitor quality control metrics, maintain accurate logs, and collaborate with leadership to ensure high-quality specimen processing and data accuracy.
- Communicate issues that may impact patient results in a timely manner.
- Facilitate effective communication between laboratory staff and external stakeholders regarding specimen status, test results, and end-of-day discrepancies.
- Keep leadership informed of inconsistencies or quality concerns and contribute to performance improvements through SOP development, updates, and quality initiatives.
- Complete required documentation accurately and within established timeframes; maintain LIS databases to support proper specimen processing and reconciliation.
- Review requisitions and test orders for completeness and accuracy; validate and verify work completed by other staff as needed.
- Provide training support and assist with shipment preparation to maintain specimen integrity.
- Demonstrate knowledge of specimen testing requirements and compliance policies, including use of laboratory systems, translation tables, and directories of services.
- Adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures, including safety standards, confidentiality requirements (HIPAA), OSHA regulations, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain safe work practices in a biohazard environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, including coverage during staffing shortages and assistance with shipment receipt and delivery.
Education
- High School Diploma required
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience preferred
Required Skills
- Strong computer proficiency and organizational skills
- Working knowledge of laboratory equipment relevant to the role
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace
- Medical background preferred, including knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology
- Previous experience in a production-based environment preferred
