A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) at a high school designs and implements science-based training programs to improve athletic performance, reduce injuries, and teach lifelong fitness skills. The role is focused on working with student-athletes in a safe and positive environment and requires strong collaboration with coaches and athletic trainers.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Program design and implementation: Design and lead strength and conditioning programs for all school-sanctioned sports. These programs should address the needs of athletes both in-season and off-season.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with sports coaches, the athletic director, and the sports medicine or athletic training staff. This includes developing sport-specific goals and assisting with the rehabilitation of injured athletes.
  • Facility management: Ensure the weight room and training facilities are well-maintained and operate safely. This includes creating and enforcing facility policies and procedures.
  • Administrative duties: Maintain accurate records of athlete attendance and progress. The coach may also be responsible for managing the program's budget and preparing annual proposals for equipment needs.
  • Needs analysis: Conduct an annual needs analysis for each sports team to determine how to best improve their strength and conditioning programs.
  • Risk management: Implement a departmental risk management plan to minimize liability and ensure a safe training environment for all students.
  • Extracurricular involvement: In some high schools, a strength coach might also be responsible for instructing physical education classes or supervising a strength and conditioning club for students.
  • Student development: Help reinforce expectations for student-athlete conduct that are consistent with the school's overall code of conduct.
  • Nutrition and recovery education: Provide general guidance to athletes on proper nutrition and recovery methods that support athletic performance.

Required qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field is typically required. Some positions may prefer or require a master's degree.
  • Certification: Hold a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). This certification is widely recognized as the industry standard.
  • Experience: Previous experience designing and implementing strength programs, preferably with a high school population, is essential. Experience as an assistant coach or intern is also valuable.
  • Safety credentials: Possess current certifications in standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED).
  • Knowledge and skills:
  • Strong knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and periodization.
