3D Printing Prototyping Technician (DfAM Support)

Join the team powering Amsted Rail’s Additive Manufacturing Hub in Petersburg. You’ll convert ideas into functional parts, consult on design-for-additive decisions, and keep our AM lab running at peak performance.

Your impact

  • Produce prototypes, fixtures, tooling, and production-support components using industrial 3D printing technologies.
  • Advise internal customers on DfAM principles to align application needs with the right materials, processes, and build strategies.
  • Own machine readiness end-to-end—setup, changeover, operation, teardown—and drive continuous process improvements.
  • Read and apply 3D CAD models, product/tooling schematics, and GD&T; interpret machine prints accurately.
  • Administer the prototype schedule with minimal oversight; provide timely updates by email, phone, virtual meetings, and in-person touchpoints.
  • Validate parts using CMM inspection and 3D laser scanning; document results in paper and electronic systems.
  • Use machining fundamentals to perform or arrange secondary operations with outside vendors when required.
  • Communicate technical insights and capability needs to peers, leadership, customers, and suppliers.
  • Uphold plant-wide safety, ergonomic, and environmental standards; keep the lab clean, calibrated, and well-maintained.
  • Support other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug & background screening
  • Regularly stand and move throughout the department for the shift; able to lift, push, and pull 10–50 lbs.
  • Wear employer-provided PPE as required by the department.
  • Mechanical aptitude with prior industrial experience preferred.
  • Background in additive manufacturing and comfort working in a production environment.
