3rd Class Drydock Worker

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Drydock Worker at Colonna's Shipyard, Inc. you will perform duties in all docking operations and waterfront activities at Colonna's Shipyard to include the dry docks, Marine Travelift facility and Marine Railway. The worker operates under the supervision of more senior workers.

The position is located onsite in Norfolk VA and will often require hours beyond a standard work week with flexible schedule availability, to include evenings/weekends/holidays, to support production/operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lay out and set up equipment for docking operations for all dock facilities.
  • Build blocks to height for docking operations independently.
  • Perform line handling duties on all docking facilities during docking operations.
  • Operate powered industrial equipment, such as forklifts/MEWP/telehandler, during dock shop operations.
  • Perform mooring operations for vessels in accordance with requirements.
  • Guide Marine Travelift on and off piers, as well as grade beams.
  • Pull straps and perform reconfiguration on Marine Travelift.
  • Perform basic table saw and bandsaw operations, as well as chainsaw operations and maintenance.
  • Perform basic small boat operations.
  • Perform duties as a deckhand, on vessels, during docking operations and waterfront activities.
  • Gather and deliver tools, materials, and equipment to work site/shop.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, supporting senior workers and coordinating with other trades to ensure timely project completion.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of docking facilities, shop, and tools.
  • Perform maintenance tasks (to include physical labor activities, pressure washing, painting, etc.) of docking facilities and waterfront assets, such as oil booms and work floats.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have at least 1 year of shipyard experience in a dock shop or related maritime trade.
  • Ability to demonstrate competence in the technical skillsets needed to execute all key responsibilities.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain powered industrial equipment certifications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand and power tools associated with trade.
  • Must be able to stand and remain at assigned worksite for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively with others.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow instructions.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with small workboat operations.
  • Industrial carpentry experience.
  • Prior forklift experience.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimal Travel; 10% or less.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
  • Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.

Pay Range: $20.50 - $22.75

Determination of base salary considers various factors, including but not limited to scope of responsibility, candidate's relative and specific experience, education level, key skills, as well as other business considerations.
