REPORTS TO: Building Principal

General Summary

In alignment with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Elementary School Teacher is responsible for instructing students in multiple subject areas. As a member of the professional staff, the teacher provides leadership in the areas of: instruction, curriculum development, classroom management, student relations, parent and community relations, and staff relations.

  • Displays a high degree of knowledge in teaching at the elementary level and is continuously improving competence.
  • Organizes learning activities to provide varied classroom activities that are congruent with educational goals and objectives.
  • Applies sound principles of learning and motivation in the planning, delivery and assessment phases of instructional delivery.
  • Uses technology as a tool within the classroom and as a management tool.
  • Establishes healthy relationships with students and staff and models respect for and acceptance of all persons in the school setting.
  • Establishes healthy relationships with families and community.
  • Maintains professional ethics and responsibilities including participation in the total school program, participation in curriculum development and building committees.
  • Displays commitment to the district's school improvement process, school-based governance system and curriculum development efforts.
  • Demonstrates experience working with a diverse student population and promotes diversity through his/her practices.

Education, Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Valid Michigan certification in Elementary Education
  • Upper Elementary (ZP) or K-5 (ZG) endorsement preferred with a strong emphasis in reading/literacy.
