6-8 Special Education Functional Room Teacher

  • Reports to: Building Principal
  • Compensation: Per OEA Master Contract

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in education from an accredited college or university required.
  • Applicant must be Highly Qualified and Endorsed for this position with: A Michigan Teaching Certificate with a K-12 Special Education endorsement (or Gen Ed (K-12) teacher willing to pursue Special Education Endorsement).

Position Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized instruction aligned with each student's IEP goals, focusing on functional academics, communication, social-emotional development, and transition readiness.
  • Create a structured, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student independence, self-advocacy, and meaningful participation in school and community activities.
  • Communicate effectively and collaboratively with students, families, staff, administration, and outside agencies to support student success.
  • Schedule, develop, implement, and monitor IEPs, including transition plans, ensuring compliance with IDEA and district requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate re-evaluation plans, collect and analyze assessment data, collaborate with school psychologists and related service providers, and facilitate re-evaluation IEP meetings.
  • Assist with the referral and evaluation process for students being considered for special education services.
  • Utilize assessment and progress-monitoring data to inform instruction, document student growth, and adjust interventions as needed.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and support staff to ensure appropriate accommodations, modifications, and services are implemented.
  • Provide training and direction to assigned paraprofessionals to ensure effective support for students.
  • Implement positive behavior supports and evidence-based interventions to address behavioral, social, and emotional needs. Knowledge of PBIS, restorative practices, and de-escalation strategies preferred.
  • Maintain a calm, consistent, and student-centered approach when responding to challenging behaviors and crisis situations.
  • Facilitate transition planning and collaborate with families, and school staff to prepare students for high school, post-secondary opportunities, employment, and independent living.
  • Demonstrate flexibility throughout the school day to meet the diverse and changing needs of students and support inclusive educational opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely special education records, progress reports, and documentation required by state and federal regulations.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, school improvement initiatives, and district activities.
  • Serve as a positive representative of the district while fostering strong relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
